Re: 2 Seven Samurai
This BRD does indeed look wonderful -- but my Samsung had a number of burps (skips?) -- even including some during the intermission music.

Indeed it does, but had no problems on my old Samsung BD-P1500 or the BD-C6900.Michael Kerpan wrote:This BRD does indeed look wonderful -- but my Samsung had a number of burps (skips?) -- even including some during the intermission music.

Strange -- I have the BD-P1600 -- which did seem to have intermittent (little) glitches.kinjitsu wrote:Indeed it does, but had no problems on my old Samsung BD-P1500 or the BD-C6900.

Re: 2 Seven Samurai
Does any one prefer the Japanese: LPCM Mono vs. Japanese: LPCM 2.0 with a strong opinion either way? While I know the 1.0 track is original, are there any strong arguments against the 2.0 besides originalism? Does the 2.0 fill the room and offer more depth?

Re: 2 Seven Samurai
The surround track is fuller, there are some enhanced sound effects, like the arrows and such that were muffled or barely existant in the original mono track. The newer surround track doesn't sound as artificial or out of place as other 'remix' tracks, the enhancements are good.

Re: 2 Seven Samurai
Out of curiosity, which of the 4 trailers on the reissue DVD is the "original US theatrical trailer" included on the original DVD release?

By the way, here's the restoration demonstration from the original DVD. I ripped it a few days ago and forgot to tell people.

2 Seven Samurai
The aforementioned English dubbed version has been uploaded to the Internet Archive.
It appears to be taken from a 1988 Australian VHS release. The long buried English dub of Seven Samurai, thought to be made for Walter Reade-Sterling's 1963 TV package "Cinema 70". Based on Akira Kurosawa's export cut made in 1954, originally shown with subtitles at the Venice Film Festival that year. Dubbing appears to be based on the subtitles from Columbia Pictures' 1956 subtitled U.S. theatrical release.

Re: 2 Seven Samurai
So should we assume Criterion's 4K does not have DV by its omission, while BFI's does?

Toho didn't do this (or Godzilla) in HDR.

Another restoration locked behind 4K compatibility. Wonderful.
BFI is releasing it on Blu-ray, at least.

Why is the film in 1.37 on the 4K but 1.33 on the Blu-Rays?

I assume they're reusing the old Blu-rays that use that ratio?

Re: 2 Seven Samurai
that's what I'm wondering, and is the BFI gonna be the same? they should be identical aside from the Dolby Vision the BFI says is on there, even though we know Toho didn't do any of the Kurosawa's with HDR. I'm curious to see
while I'm glad it's here, I think it's safe to keep the Criterion BD for the extras and get the new BFI 4K, but if there are gonna be differences, I guess we have time to wait and see what they are

Maybe I haven't been following this correctly, but are people saying that BFI's specs might be incorrect regarding the DV on the 4K?

No, that, like they did with The Seventh Seal, BFI is doing an HDR grade on a SDR restoration/master.therewillbeblus wrote: ↑Thu Aug 15, 2024 3:18 pmMaybe I haven't been following this correctly, but are people saying that BFI's specs might be incorrect regarding the DV on the 4K?

Looks like even though BFI's The Seventh Seal was in a DV container (as this ostensibly will be?) it's still tied (or non-preferred) to the Criterion's SDR transfer in our UHD thread. How does that happen, when it's not just in HDR but DV? Does it come down to the materials just not being up to snuff, and so comparably the PQ doesn't matter?
I'd like to jump on the BFI given the specs difference, but this is giving me pause

Re: 2 Seven Samurai
I'm not sure how much, if any, noticable difference there is between presenting SDR material in SDR vs. a presenting SDR material with a restrained HDR (I'm certain that BFI isn't going to do something offensive with the HDR grade.)
Someone here with a better grasp on the technology will probably chime in.
I just think Criterion's philosophy is clear at this point, they will present HDR except if the filmmaker's request no HDR or when the restoration was in SDR.
As for why ths was done in SDR, I think it comes down to less about the materials, although that may play a part, and more to do with Toho's belief that they shouldn't use HDR on older films.

Re: 2 Seven Samurai
Given the issue I've had with scratched UHD's from Criterion, I'm fine holding on to their original BD release (which is likely duplicated here anyway given their standard practice) and getting the BFI UHD in addition to it if it turns out to be marginally better in terms of picture and/or audio quality.
