James Bond Franchise (1962-∞)

#576 Post by MichaelB » Thu Jun 20, 2019 3:27 am

I think most people were fully aware of the Sun’s only occasionally glancing relationship with the truth well before Hillsborough.

In fact, that’s why they came unstuck over Elton John - they’d run a series of largely untrue stories about him and rent boys that nonetheless revolved around a tiny kernel of fact. But as soon as they threw caution to the winds and ran a story about him that was not only 100% untrue but provably so, Elton withdrew all his previous defamation suits and sued over just that one story. The paper crumpled immediately as they knew that they didn’t have a leg to stand on and that damages and especially legal fees might well amount to considerably more than the £1 million that they ended up paying him in an out of court settlement.

Yeah, I know. I just feel Hillsborough should be brought up every time someone asks a question in regard to the Sun and credibility, mainly to never forget.

Haven't clicked the link but is it just stock footage of a dumpster fire?

It actually looks fine, but there is an air of "See? We are actually filming something!" And maybe ending the video with a fireball wasn't the best choice...

That makes sense I suppose. While I didn't hate Spectre it was full of half baked ideas including Waltz as Blofeld. Why hire someone you know can be an incredibly convincing villain just to have him fizzle out so anticlimactically? Daniel Craig's Bond films have been really hit or miss with me. I love Casino Royale and Skyfall and films like Quantum of Solace just...exist.

For me QoS gets better every time I watch it. Pretty underrated, I'd say. At this point I'd need to watch SP again to see whether it's actually better but I have a feeling it would slip a few spots in my rankings. I like large swathes of it but the London ending drags and feels tacked on.

B25 can honestly go in either direction for me at this point but I'm most afraid it'll end up a mess. Too many cooks in the kitchen, it seems.

QoS has always been problematic to me at least from a pure directing and editing point of view. I was obviously much younger when I saw it in theaters and even then, I remember thinking "god that opening chase is awful to look at". Amalric isnt a good villain either (and talk about an anticlimatic end for him...) and the overall story felt like a letdown after Casino Royale, which was all the more disappointing that it's a rare (the only one ?) JB to be a direct follow-up sequel.
Skyfall was much better though I dont think it ages well. Spectre was clearly full of hit-or-miss moments.

The editing in QoS is indeed its Achilles Heel, but underneath there's a solid, fast paced spy yarn that wants to do its own thing. It's not entirely successful and a lot of things feel rushed but I still dig it. Really the only action I'm not a fan of is the boat scene. Amalric is serviceable and appropriately slimy, the perfect attributes for the crooked businessman. CR is better but I like to think of QoS as a contrast to the prior film.

Why is this going around the internet that the next James Bond will be a woman?

Lashana Lynch

I seriously doubt Fleming's Estate or Barbara Broccoli would ever approve something like this.

I’m mostly confused because the fact the plot of the film was retired Bond teaming up with the “new” 007 who is female is something that has definitely been known for at least several months? Don’t see why the hoopla suddenly came about.

I see she is in #25 as Nomi. Does that mean she'll be Bond in #26? Or, is all of this a contrivance?

As of right now it’s just the plot of this one movie that she is the new 007 who took over following Bond’s retirement. I don’t imagine it will have lasting consequence beyond this single film and will mostly just be a playful tease for the duration of this one film.

This was my understanding as well. She'll simply be taking on the 007 code name after this Bond retires or leaves.

On the subject of Barbara Broccoli I was under the impression that she was adamant that Bond was always going to be a man as long as she was around. So I'm unsure what exactly is going on. I certainly wouldn't mind a black or female Bond. But I'm under the impression that Broccoli might.

Seems like an obvious "fuck you" to Danny Boyle who had planned to kill of Bond before he left the project.

Terrible title. Who does have time to die? Sounds like something a geriatric Bond would say if he was cancelling an appointment at Dignitas. The World is Not Enough is the only pseudo-Fleming title that’s really landed in my opinion.

It's called that because Bond as a franchise has no time to die while it can still cash in at the box office.

I hope that title is spoken at least once during the movie because it is hilariously ridiculous.

Well, it does lend itself to a theme song by The Guess Who.

“No time for a summer friend
No time for the love you send
Seasons change and so did I
I’ve got no time to die

I got, got, got, got no time (to die)...”

I think while it can have the meaning everyone above is mentioning (i.e. having "no time to die"), I think it is intended as sort of a double meaning (even if kind of a weak one) with a meaning such as "this is 'no time to die.'"

That’s how I read it. I don’t think it’s a bad title, but I’m also not the audience for these movies so

Excited for Ana de Armas' role, hopefully it's a meaty one (or as much as a 'Bond girl' can be).
