The Pain and Glory one was hysterical.

Meanwhile, Bellochio's film is receiving good reviews. He's unfashionable, so of course his is screening the day-of what appears to be the festival flop.

Maybe he sincerely liked the film, but Kechiche's film has the feel of Fremaux slotting something at the end he'll know will get dragged and will know will get people talking, especially as people are leaving. He seems like the sort whose ego was bristled when Kechiche pawned his Palme to finance seven hours of butt movie. I don't think those who left will feel they missed out on the second, and perhaps last, installment of Mektoub, though. I don't know, the Mektoub saga is hilarious, so hopefully Kechiche has finances in place to round out the trilogy.

Dolan's seems like a shrug of a film that might as well have played Toronto.

The reaction to Desplechin, though, is disappointing---a lot are comparing it to an extended cop show. I'll still see it because I liked the panned Jimmy P., but it doesn't seem to have the multiple narrative strands that can make a Desplechin delirious.

Of the remaining, Suleiman's looms large. Triet's film looks like this year's Double Lover or Knife + Heart, and I mean that postively.

The Triet film, especially with her reuniting with Efira, is my most anticipated title after how much I enjoyed their Victoria. Even if it’s a dud, Efira is still toplining the next Verhoven film, so she’s sitting prettier than usual this year for some overdue international recognition outside of France

I usually see the films from directors in Competition who I haven't seen anything from before the festival, but I didn't have time this year, so Triet remains elusive to me. I obviously cannot speak to how Triet's film will be received but, yeah, it looks like she'll get some outsized attention at next year's Cannes with the Verhoeven film, unless Verhoeven heals quickly and preps it for Berlin or something.

As much as I think Assayas should have a guaranteed spot in Competition, Fremaux at least does a good job of cycling French directors in and out of Competition. In the last four editions there have been sixteen discrete French directors: Ly, Desplechin, Sciamma, Triet, Brizé, Godard, Honoré, Gonzalez, Ozon, Campillo, Hazanavicius, Doillon, Garcia, Assayas, Dumont, Guiraudie. Even accounting for Brizé in 2015, twenty discrete French directors have played Competition in five years.

Here's a link to a non-paywalled ScreenDaily jury grid: https://pbs.twimg.com/media/D7VcyYaV4AArC6h.jpg

International Cinephile Society: https://icsfilm.org/features/cannes-201 ... try-panel/

Todas Las Criticas: http://www.todaslascriticas.com.ar/cannes/2019

Ioncinema: https://www.ioncinema.com/wp-content/up ... chiche.jpg

Of note on the ScreenDaily, those two French critics also gave an X to I, Daniel Blake, so it seems like they might be allergic to his politics.

I take back what I said earlier regarding Mektoub being the festival flop; it does legitimately seem to have its defenders.

It's also clear that Dolan probably shouldn't have received an automatic invite and the Sachs should have been in Fortnite or UCR.

With two films left, I have the tiers at:

Pain and Glory
A Portrait of a Girl on Fire
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
Parasite
-----
The Whistlers
The Traitor
Bacurau
Atlantique
A Hidden Life
Sorry We Missed You
The Wild Goose Lake
-----
Les Miserables
Little Joe
Young Ahmed
-----
Oh, Mercy
The Dead Don't Die
Frankie
Mathias and Maxime
Mektoub, My Love: Intermezzo

SPC picked up Marco Bellochio's The Traitor, which does look like something that would make money and pick up an Oscar nomination.

Magnolia snagged The Whistlers.

Dare I make predictions? I haven't got the Oscar winner - which is comparatively much easier to guess - right for the last four years, so trying to sniff out what Cannes jurors responded to is kind of a daunting task.

Palme d'Or: Pain and Glory
Grand Prix: Portrait of a Lady on Fire
Jury Prize: Les misérables
Director: Marco Bellocchio, The Traitor
Actor: Brad Pitt, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
Actress: Virginie Efira, Sibyl
Screenplay: It Must Be Heaven

Oh, it's a lot more fun to predict than the Oscars. Last year, I correctly guessed seven of the films that would win a prize, but only correctly guessed two of the right categories (Actor and, bizzarely, Actress). DarkImbecile nailed five of the films, but only guessed Actor correctly. (I guess there weren't many other contenders beyond the dogman of Dogman.)

Suleiman is one I struggled to place in there. I had him at Director, but then thought that since most of the jury likes Malick to move things around. Actress was also difficult. Who else but Efira? It reminds me of Diane Kruger in 2017, who carried a lukewarmly received film. Maybe Robbie as a sort of nod to Hollywood. Potentially Girl on Fire, but it winning there just feels like a massive disappointment.

That parenthetical feels like an insult.

Not least because almost none of us actually get a chance to see those in competition, resulting in pure tea-leaf exercises like the following:

Palme d'Or --- Pain and Glory
Grand Prix --- Parasite
Director --- Terrence Malick, A Hidden Life
Screenplay --- Quentin Tarantino, Once Upon a Time... In Hollywood
Actor --- Pierfrancesco Favino, The Traitor
Actress --- Noémie Merlant, Portrait of a Lady on Fire
Jury --- Bacurau

Agreed, Best Actress doesn't seem to have many contenders that we know of. The only ones that were singled out are Efira, Haenel, and Robbie (a supporting turn, yes, but sometimes those do win - Virna Lisi in Queen Margot comes to mind). My perception might be skewed, however, since most of the stuff I read is in English.

Or maybe it'll be someone who didn't really get much attention from reviewers. Not sure about those of you who have a firmer grasp on Cannes awards history, but I'm often taken by surprise by the acting winners (Sandra Corveloni for Line of Passage and Jaclyn Jose for Ma' Rosa, for instance).

Actor: Song Kang-ho
Actress: Virginie Efira

Diop could be there for the Camera d'Or? Otherwise, Jury seems a nice spot for her.

FIPRESCI Prizes:
Competition: Elia Sulieman, It Must Be Heaven
Un Certain Regard: Kantemir Balagov, Beanpole
Directors Fortnight/Critics Week: Robert Eggers, The Lighthouse

I said this before the festival started, but this was really the year for Balagov to make the leap to Competition.

Grabbed a Route 44 for the ceremony.

Emily Beecham is on the red carpet! I forgot about that possibility, perhaps because the response to Little Joe was muted and so was, I assume, her performance. Good for them for rewarding subtle performances ala Rooney Mara. Hausner also present.

The actresses from A Portrait of a Girl on Fire and Sciamma are also present.

I like them, but why are the Dardennes here. Give them a Jury Prize to validate that they are still welcome and still fine, but nothing more

Also present: Kleber Mendonça Filho (and presumably Juliano Dornelles), Banderas, Tarantino, Ly, Bong, Suleiman, Diop, and Efira.

That's way too many people. I can see Tarantino showing up just because he wants too, and to his credit he picked up the Palme Dog yesterday. After all the last-minute editing, he deserves to chill in Cannes all he wants until it's time to ramp up press on his film.

If you're curious about watching: https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x5gv6be

You'll probably hafta set your clock to Paris time.

Cannes is really doing a good job with the multiple choice distractors this year.

I suppose this Malick perfume commercial Canal+ just aired is the closest he's getting this year.

I wonder if that commercial was a wry nod back to Knight of Cups!

Anyway la cérémonie is starting now. I just hope that Mektoub My Love is not the butt of too many jokes.

I couldn't understand what he was saying, but I am pretty sure you lifted that from the unfunny-sounding French comedian MC.

Special Mentions are so lame. That's what the Jury Prize is for.
