I heard poor Jim Caviezel had a co-starring role as a windmill questioning the role of God in a modern world reduced to a single out-of-focus appearance in the background of a scene with Adam Driver

It’ll be interesting to see who buys the distribution rights.Finch wrote:Wouldn't be surprised if Malick shot this in German with English subs to be added to the print/DCP/home video releases.

Worse, he's still out there whittling down to a cross for Resurrection of the ChristDarkImbecile wrote: ↑Thu Apr 18, 2019 5:08 pmI heard poor Jim Caviezel had a co-starring role as a windmill questioning the role of God in a modern world reduced to a single out-of-focus appearance in the background of a scene with Adam Driver

Who do you guys like better, Terry Malick or Terrence Gilliam?

As far as once-esteemed filmmakers whose later works have had more of a mixed reception, Malick >>>>>>>>>> Gilliam for my money.
It sounds as if this might be slated to go into theatrical release in France soon after its Cannes debut, based on this UGC (large theater chain in France) tweet.

I see two actors actually standing inside a closed space, seems promising

Good grief. A nearly three hour film and all they can release is a 15 second clip.

Re: A Hidden Life (Terrence Malick, 2019)
All the films in the official selection have 15 second or so clips screened at the Cannes opening ceremony. That's what this is.FrauBlucher wrote: ↑Tue May 14, 2019 4:40 pmGood grief. A nearly three hour film and all they can release is a 15 second clip.

His past several films have essentially used very wide lenses for every moment. I would be willing to bet the same will be true of this one.The Pachyderminator wrote: ↑Tue May 14, 2019 11:47 pmInteresting choice to use a wide-angle lens for such an intimate moment.

Looks less hyperactive than his last few. Feeling hopeful.

Re: A Hidden Life (Terrence Malick, 2019)
Echo that comment. What made me care not about his last few (though I did enjoy Song to Song) was their incessant overuse of pretentious voice-over and indeed hyperactivity that completely negated any connection with the characters. This seems, well like old Malick (which is exciting in my book) and I hope this will indeed be a return to form

Re: A Hidden Life (Terrence Malick, 2019)
To The Wonder I liked. All be it less than a Tree of Life. Song to Song and Knight of Cups I found unfortunately insufferable. There was definitely a transgression after Tree of Life. I hope this returns to more of the form of his previous works prior to ToL.

The embargo should be lifted on this in about two-ish hours.

Re: A Hidden Life (Terrence Malick, 2019)
Is there any reason to expect this to be better received than his last few films?
I'm looking forward to it regardless, but I'm anticipating the usual mixed to extremely negative reviews - plus a few ardent defenders.

It looks more coherent and focused than those last few films, for one

Re: A Hidden Life (Terrence Malick, 2019)
He said he returned to making less abstraction off the cuff films and more grounded like his earlier ones. To be honest that didn't mean a whole new Malick obviously (and the clip is proof) but seeing I consider everything from Badlands to Tree of Life perfect I'm happy with the clues so far.

Re: A Hidden Life (Terrence Malick, 2019)
A lot of very positive responses to this in the first wave of reviews, with “best since Tree of Life” a repeated phrase; I’ve loved much of his recent phase (especially To the Wonder), but I’m excited to see him stretch in a different direction.

Re: A Hidden Life (Terrence Malick, 2019)
There were at least two masterpieces in his last three fictional films, but the positive reception has me excited, if a bit suspicious since I'm used to Malick dividing.

I'm not on board with a return-to-form narrative with Malick, but everything about this has me enthused.
I wonder who's going to release this in the States.
