If it wasn't clear, I was agreeing with his sarcasm and criticizing the way THR framed that very likely problem

Maybe A24's also being sarcastic and this still opens in three weeks

Re: Under the Silver Lake (David Robert Mitchell, 2019)
Release pushed back again, to April 19, 2019, approaching a year later than the original release date
...representatives for the movie denied that any changes have been made to the cut screened at Cannes. Instead, the new release date will offer Under the Silver Lake the chance for a fresh start.

So A24 is just not fielding an Oscar contender this year?

Re: Under the Silver Lake (David Robert Mitchell, 2019)
This... does not appear to be an Oscar contender regardless of when it comes out. It's a lengthy genre picture that's gotten mixed reviews.
Don't forget about mid90s, wouldn't surprise me at all if the screenplay got nominated

This opened here (Belgium) two months ago and I enjoyed it quite a bit. Wears its references on its sleeve (The Long Goodbye, Chinatown, Pynchon and dozens of others) which enhanced the experience I thought. Excellently cast in all the supporting roles too. It's still showing in the local arthouse so at least it seem to draw in enough of a crowd around these parts.

It's also not a good movie regardless of it's non-existent Oscar chances

Re: Under the Silver Lake (David Robert Mitchell, 2019)
I have. It started promisingly enough, but in the end it completely failed. I was rather a fan of his two earlier films but this feels very different. This feels more like a Lynch pastiche with Chinatown/Altman/Inherent Vice thrown in but is not half as interesting as those films.
The ending is really bad too.

Didn't mean to imply that this movie specifically looks like something that would win a lot of Oscars, just that it's weird that A24 isn't even releasing something for the awards season.
And I'd love to see a screenplay nom for mid90s, though I think it's kind of a long shot

Re: Under the Silver Lake (David Robert Mitchell, 2019)
It's the awards season now, mid-October is currently (perhaps to diminishing returns as people might forget about something like First Man before too long) the hot time to release your Best Picture hopeful, before the pendulum inevitably swings back to Christmastime.
For better or worse, mid90s is A24's Oscar season release this year, along with what will surely be a strong campaign for Eighth Grade and First Reformed

Re: Under the Silver Lake (David Robert Mitchell, 2019)
It's not awful, it's just... dumb and pointless? And this is coming from someone who loves all those films I mentioned (Inherent Vice isn't dumb and pointless to reiterate my point). I was digging this movie's vibe at first but it just becomes dumber and pointless the more it goes until you just don't care about any character. Haven't seen Southland Tales to confirm the atrocitious similarities. Mitchell gets the L.A vibe rather well, the humor is fun at parts and I always love this Pynchon weird mystery vibe and secret signs and puzzles. But I just felt a big meh when the film ended, and unlike the terrific Burning, the more I think about this film the less I like it.

Oscar discussion that doesn't pertain in some way to A24's release schedule for this film moved here

Re: Under the Silver Lake (David Robert Mitchell, 2019)
I saw this film at Fantastic Fest and loved it. I haven't seen The Myth Of The American Sleepover, and I really didn't like It Follows, but Under The Silver Lake immediately shot to my 2nd favorite film of the year, after First Reformed [so yeah, A24 is dominating the year for me]. I love Southland Tales and Inherent Vice, and this fits right in there with them. I thought it was hilarious and compelling and wouldn't have minded if it was an hour longer. I've been looking forward to watching it again, and have been telling everyone who will listen to go see it in December, so I'm bummed about the release date change.

As someone who did see it, I would love to hear your opinion on the final third, which I just found so anticlimactic. Not that this type of thing can ruin a movie (Inherent Vice and Long Goodbye aren't about the mystery of the case), but just that I found myself wondering how everyone read the script and thought where the mystery goes is compelling.

Ill be seeing this at AFIFest, looking forward to seeing this cut. Didn’t see the original cut but loved the synopsis and trailer when I first heard about it. Seems like its not a bad film, just unnecessarily long. Poor DRM though, Must be a drag to have your film cut down and up for release twice only for it to happen a 3rd time over the span of 2 years. Doesn’t look like he has any projects coming up either.

As far as I'm aware, the film has not been recut. The running time when I saw it at Fantastic Fest matched the Cannes runtime.

And there is only one cut, A24 never asked for him to edit the film. Neither should he, as I doubt anything being cut will make a difference. It isn't length which is the issue.

Re: Under the Silver Lake (David Robert Mitchell, 2019)
Sorry for the delayed response, I wasn't ignoring you, I was just really busy the past several days (including being reminded last-minute by my brother that we had tickets to see Goblin perform live accompaniment to Suspiria). I was able to post that one comment because it was just a statement of fact, not requiring me to try to put coherent opinions together, & easy to post while I was waiting in line to vote.
I agree in a sense that the end is "anticlimactic," but I found it to be anticlimactic in the best way.dda1996a wrote: ↑Fri Nov 02, 2018 1:27 pmAs someone who did see it, I would love to hear your opinion on the final third, which I just found so anticlimactic. SpoilerShow
After all the buildup that Riley Keough's character has likely come to some kind of terrible harm, we find that she's happy and comfortable in the underground bunker; yet, at the same time we know that she is bound to die in there, but she shrugs off any possibility of escaping her fate.
The idea that there is this huge conspiracy, which has resulted in the deaths of multiple characters, is all to protect a group of rich men's absurd belief that in burying themselves underground (with a harem of beautiful young women), they'll transcend to some higher plane/dimension/planet (at this point, I'm a little fuzzy in remembering the specifics, one of the reasons I'd love to see the film again).
I thought it was funny that these "titans of the world" are essentially committing suicide for a plan as irrational as something like the Heaven's Gate cult, but also sad for all the collateral damage they're leaving in their wake.

It's a bit funny, but that's all there is to it. Compared to the melancholy and nostalgia running through Inherent Vice for example. It just seems so...lazy I guess

A24 is probably going to move the release date up for this given that it's somehow leaked in HD (please, no discussion on-board of where to find it)

It’s out on BD in France next week. I don’t really think A24 minds considering the Lobster was a huge success for them and was out on other platforms for a very long time.
