The Last House on the Left

MARI, SEVENTEEN, IS DYING. EVEN FOR HER THE WORST IS YET TO COME!
The directorial debut of Wes Craven, the man behind such horror favourites as A Nightmare on Elm Street, The Hills Have Eyes and Scream, The Last House on the Left justly retains its reputation as one of the most harrowing cinematic experiences of all time, nearly half a century on from its original release.

On the eve of her 17th birthday, Mari and friend Phyllis set off from her family home to the big city to attend a concert by shock-rockers Bloodlust. Attempting to pick up some marijuana on the way, the pair run afoul of a group of vicious crooks, headed up by the sadistic and depraved Krug (David Hess). Gagged and bound, the young women are bundled into a car trunk and driven to the woods, where the gang subject them to a terrifying ordeal of sexual humiliation, torture and murder.

Unleashed on an unsuspecting public in 1972, The Last House on the Left shocked audiences with its graphic and unflinching portrayal of interpersonal violence, paving the way for a whole host of cheap imitators looking to capitalise on its success. It is Wes Craven’s original alone, however, that remains one of the true watershed moments in horror (and indeed, film) history.

I presume (given that it was a FAB Press publication) that some of the information in David A. Szulkin's essential Last House On The Left book will appear in the extra features (especially in lieu of interviews with a couple of the actors who apparently disowned their roles in the film afterwards!)

Perhaps Criterion will take this opportunity to release The Virgin Spring on blu-ray as a companion piece. Ingmar Bergman could use a little exposure.

I wonder how Louis B Mayer would feel that MGM no longer has The Wizard of Oz or Singin' In The Rain but it does have...

I do think it’s very good, but that the second half doesn’t live up to the first.

Needs more presence of "wacky" cop comedy on the cover.

I'm no Craven fan but I did find myself shocked by how much I liked this. You can read my write-up and comparison with the far worse I Spit On Your Grave here

How uncut is the first version? I know there are some extremely graphic and controversial shots, such as
Sensitive contentShow
one of the girls urinating herself

and the
Sensitive contentShow
"forced lesbian"

scene. Are these included?

There are only few films I can think of that I dislike more than this one. I suppose it has to do with the fact that it lacks any sort of wit that Craven's later films would have and because of that it's just grossly unpleasant to me in every way because of this. What's really remarkable is that this version is actually somehow worse in my opinion than the remake. The fact Bergman's The Virgin Spring was an inspiration for this only makes it even worse in my mind.

To answer Boosmahn's question yes this is the fully uncut version. The BBFC site states that the film was finally given a full clearence for release in 2008. I've chosen to link the Case Study the BBFC did regarding the whole affair. Not safe for work obviously. It's an interesting article for sure if you're down for this kind of history.

Thanks. This sort of thing is very interesting to me... it puts into perspective society's views of violence and sex in film and how they have evolved over time.

I personally thought Craven's film was way more uneven and at least ISOYG can have a feminist reading placed onto it whereas Last House is just cruel, tonally schizophrenic garbage. Granted, it's been about 8 years since I've watched ISOYG but I watched Last House a few months ago and absolutely despised it. Arrow will do their typically amazing job on it so I'm happy for the film's fans.

I felt the first half had a raw, harrowing power. But that the second half was a bit of a wasted opportunity, as the avenging parents became cartoon villains. A landmark but Craven still finding his feet and I felt Hills Have Eyes was more tonally and thematically consistent.

Still never seen I Spit on Your Grave but I heard the remake had a very good and provocative second sequel...

I assume based on the fact that it's not listed that Arrow's maybe adopted an approach of waiting to see how a few weeks of pre-orders go before settling on a number. Though I'd imagine 5,000 for both US and UK is likely.

Delayed to June 18th in the UK and July 3rd in the US, but will include more extras and the "complete newly remastered film score on CD".

Interestingly, my copy was dispatched 2 days ago from Arrow but the product page still shows "Pre order" and not "In Stock".

Got mine. Flicked through it. Looks raw yet fresh with appropriately heavy & swarming grain field yielding strong enough detail - & colours appear alive and intact. Craven would of course go on to create films with greater sophistication and subtlety. But this is certainly his strongest, most concentrated piece of work & a fantastic start. Seems to draw on source materials of varying quality. Some sceneshave what people refer to as a “dupey” look with some shadow detail going into blue murk and some into chunky yellow. But, on the whole highly impressive- and does look alive and healthy for a roughly put together 16mm film. Surely the best Blu ray by far of a Craven film.
