I suppose you could argue that a few previous characters that Gerwig has played have been in danger of flying off into self-created wonderlands, but a Barbie film might push things to extremes! Of course more than anything else the film will need to live up to the Barbie Girl song.

I hear the Karen Carpenter estate is already planning to sue.

Can't possibly beat Barbie (and Ken) from Toy Story 3.

Barbie: Awakening
Barbie: The Becoming
Barbie: Covenant

Actually there could be something quite audacious about Margot Robbie going from Sharon Tate to this similarly sunny character. Maybe at the end Barbie's dream house is besieged by a group of spin-off dolls with a grudge (led by Sindy and her boyfriend Action Man naturally) and instead of a big massacre it turns into a pool party where everyone gets make overs and makes snide comments about the one aspirational doll who maxed out her credit cards on the single swimsuit that is the same one that she brought with her last season.

Isn't is about time that we start exploring The Mattel Cinematic Universe? </sarcasm>

Excited to see how the Robbie stans (or the Warners marketing people, for that matter) navigate the one-two tonal assault of Babylon and this

I’m still holding out a sliver of hope that this much genuine talent wouldn’t be involved if there wasn’t something more interesting than merchandising going on here

I think Gerwig has stated this would be a flat-out satire, and I'm not expecting anything else- especially from a witty female director who has been open about body image issues/conditioned expectations around women from media affecting her self-esteem, at least in her work as a writer/actor collaborator. I'm really looking forward to this actually

But that still leaves open the question as to whether it will be good Brady Bunch Movie satire or bad Bewitched movie satire (thank goodness Nora Ephron's career did not end with that film and instead Julie & Julia!)

Kyle Buchanan says that there will be multiple actors playing Barbie and Ken in this (including Hari Nef as Barbie and Simu Liu as Ken).

I'm sure there is a boatload of hyperbole in this, but Simu Liu says he only signed on to the film after a junior agent told him "If I could stake my career on any one script, it’s the ‘Barbie’ script. I really think you should do it."

it's only one photo, but Gosling actually doesn't look "pretty" enough to be a traditional Ken doll - but then again, he may not be playing one, especially with the bleached hair.
