James Bond Franchise (1962-∞)
Re: James Bond Franchise (1962-∞)
I'm fully expecting the next director to be Guy Ritchie, Paul McGuigan, or Matthew Vaughn, all of whom I think are the same person anyway.

You forgot McG.
I'll concede I have no idea what they're doing plotwise because of the ending of Spectre. I mean what more is there to do with Craig's Bond?

Just have him do a bunch of James Bond shit, that’s what. This is not exactly a series renowned for its careful plotting and detailed character exploration.

I'm a Danny Boyle fan, so the news bums me out. However, should Eon go back to the original directors shortlist, I'd be most interested in David Mackenzie. I loved everything he did with Hell or High Water, and Outlaw King looks terrific.

He recently directed EON's non-Bond film Film Stars Don't Die in Liverpool, so if Broccoli & Wilson liked working with him, I could definitely see him as a possibility for that reason.

Danny Boyle's exit from James Bond throws franchise into chaos
Reportedly, they now have to go back to the original script which was completely different from Boyle's and thus the whole production so far needs to be scrapped. Looking at a possible late 2020 release now.

Broccoli and Wilson will only hire a yes-man who'll do anything he's told. The best Bonds were made by journeymen directors who didn't deviate from the template. Why anyone thought hiring Boyle was going to work, I have no idea.

Boyle wasn't an original or bold choice to begin with (all those people mourning his departure on social media must have forgotten about Slumdog Millionare and a bunch of his other films though I do like the first Trainspotting and 28 Days Later). Agree about the journeymen statement as the best Bonds for me were Casino Royale and From Russia With Love, with a lot of shite in between. Wonder if this is the tipping point for Craig?

It’s pretty certain that Craig will be out after this one.

Re: James Bond Franchise (1962-∞)
Of course. Boyle isn't that radical a filmmaker, not now anyway, but he'd have his own casting ideas and script (and apparently the Hodge/Boyle script is wildly different to what Purves/Wade have written) and would probably want to try something 'different' with the brand, especially if it's Craig's last. Mendes is a competent director, but very much someone who'll put someone else's work on the screen - not a criticism, but he's smart enough to know if you make a Bond film, it comes with baggage and you work with that to make the best film you can. Personally, I didn't like the Mendes films at all. Best bet for Broccoli and Wilson, find out what Martin Campbell is up to. He's still made the best two Bonds in the last thirty years.Finch wrote: ↑Thu Aug 23, 2018 12:59 pmBoyle wasn't an original or bold choice to begin with (all those people mourning his departure on social media must have forgotten about Slumdog Millionare and a bunch of his other films though I do like the first Trainspotting and 28 Days Later). His 2 Bond movies are also probably Campbell's 2 best movies, so I always thought it's not only him who's behind these 2 Bond qualities, but also the people he can surround himself with, maybe like Phil Meheux and Stuart Baird.

I think Mendes is a pretty decent director, and aside from the awful Spectre he's made films I consistently found... enjoyable. I mean Skyfall was terrific (also I guess his use of the best DPs also helped)

Re: James Bond Franchise (1962-∞)
Some of the more successful Bond directors - Peter Hunt, John Glen - started out as Bond editors, which seems a rather effective career path for this type of film. Especially since a fair bit of the directing is courtesy of the second unit, so the editor may well be more intimately familiar with everything that's been shot for the film than the actual director.

He did direct the British TV series Edge of Darkness - although he did direct the Mel Gibson movie, which I watched and don't even remember.
He also directed the Green Lantern, which I always get confused with the Green Hornet (though that's the Seth Rogen/Michel Gondry film) - both were awful.

Re: James Bond Franchise (1962-∞)
I had a look back at Campbell's filmography, but outside of the 2 Bonds, and maybe the 2 Zorro (at least the 1st one), most of the movies I've seen there were very mediocre.
I found him to make quite consistently well crafted movies, but they often don't seem to reach much higher than this (though I really enjoy Jarhead and found myself revisiting Road to Perdition for a better result than the memory I had from it).

James Bond Franchise (1962-∞)
I just saw most of Campbell’s first Zorro movie on cable the other night, as it turns out. Still holds up for the most part as an enjoyable and professionally made big studio film.
Haven’t seen the second since its original release but remember it being a huge drop off in quality.

The first Zorro is still pretty fun. Watched it with the kids and they rather liked it too. I still haven't finished the second one, which is absolutely dire.

I also think that Martin Campbell made some of the best Bond films (and handled the Zorro films remarkably well also), but we shouldn't forget his beginnings in the 1970s British sex comedy genre with the classic Eskimo Nell (NSFW) and The Sex Thief!

I actually was looking forward to what Boyle might do with the franchise. I'm not a big fan of his but I adored the Trainspotting sequel and was interested to see if he'd try a similar aesthetic here.

Martin Campbell has a talent for shooting scenes with stunts. Or he has a talent for hiring good 2nd unit directors? I don't know, but the strong stunts is a hallmark of his work evident in the Zorro films, his two Bond films, and what I've seen of that movie where they're climbing a snowy mountain or whatever, with Stallone et al.

Renny Harlin directed Cliffhanger. Campbell did Vertical Limit though, which I've not seen, but can't believe is better since Chris O'Donnell is yer lead. All the Best People wrote: ↑Sat Aug 25, 2018 1:02 amMartin Campbell has a talent for shooting scenes with stunts. Re: James Bond Franchise (1962-∞)
LOL at the Grauniard suggesting Tom Ford.
So, QT is out of the picture obviously with shooting and post on OUATIH keeping him busy for the next 12 months, and curiously, despite his open love for Bond, the Broccolis never seem to be keen on working with him - too much of an auteur sensibility?
I personally can't stand Christopher Nolan's shit but, like QT, he's a professed Bond fan and he might be available. And he'd be a bigger draw for non- or casual Bond fans than middlebrow helmers like Joe Wright.
Out of the people that were in the running before Boyle got the gig, the chap who's done the NI film 71 would seem a good bet too if free.

It will never be Christopher Nolan or Quentin Tarantino. It will always be Danny Boyle and Sam Mendes. Not literally, just figuratively.

Yann Demange's name was mentioned in the Guardian today. Would make sense; not too big a name to overshadow the franchise. Can't see Nolan making a Bond movie. Won't he and his brother want to co-write it?
