(Arthur Penn, 1966)
Release date: 25 September 2017
Limited Dual Format Edition (UK Blu-ray premiere)

Preceding Bonnie and Clyde by a year, Arthur Penn's (Mickey One) acclaimed film boasts enviable pedigree – produced by the legendary Sam Spiegel, with a screenplay by Lillian Hellman from the novel by Horton Foote, a rousing score by John Barry, and a stellar cast of the hottest stars of the day (including Marlon Brando, Jane Fonda, Robert Redford, Angie Dickinson and James Fox). The story of an escaped con making his way back to the corrupt Texas town and the people who sent him to prison, The Chase is a telling indictment of violence in American society. A seminal work which is ripe for rediscovery.

A stone-cold masterpiece.
Probably the Penn movie.

Damn right. "He's coming fast-HE'S COMING REAL FAST!"
Most implausible, gleefully surreal sex scene in a mainstream film, too

I've probably seen it a half-dozen times thanks to HBO airing it repeatedly one summer.

Henry Rollins's finest hour as an actor? I think so!

That would be Heat where his head looks like it belongs on a smaller body and Al Pacino somehow beats the shit out of him.

At first I thought The Chase was the Arthur Ripley noir. Oh well.

Yeah, I probably haven't even thought about this movie in over two decades, but I saw it so many times in my youth (likely thanks to those same HBO showings) that it's taken on that kind of foggily remembered, archetypal aura that only repeated exposure at a young age can create. Upon glimpsing the poster here, I remembered it better as the "You kidnapped me with a candy bar?!" movie. I feel obligated to revisit this one.

Standard edition confirmed for 25th May - same Blu-ray disc as the limited edition (extras and all), but no DVD, booklet or reversible sleeve, and it comes in an Amaray instead of a Scanavo case.
