Hungarian films on DVD

I'm looking for any of Michael Curtiz's (Kertész Mihály) Hungarian films on DVD. Anyone have any idea if such things exist?

I believe there are none of Curtiz's Hungarian films available on DVD at the moment. Hopefully this is of interest.

Sodom and Gomorrah (which I believe is an Austrian production) is the only one I'm aware of. I believe it offers English translation of the title cards.

To the best of my knowledge only one of Curtiz's Hungarian films survives in any form and that it is a short called My Brother is Coming from 1919. There at least used to be videos of it all over the Internet.

Great to hear about Vuk (I've got kids) and curious about Hortobagy. Really wish they'd put out Csontvary over some of the 80's schlock (but then that's a 'Why don't they release what I want?' whine)

I've wanted to see Hortobágy for years, partly because of its reputation but also because I suspect Ken Russell used large chunks of it as background footage when making his Béla Bartók documentary.

Another film which interests me (and hopefully gets the DVD treatment from Magyar Nemzeti Filmarchívum) is Magasiskola / The Falcons (István Gaál, 1970).

I can't imagine that they wouldn't release a new digital restoration eventually, since it's a masterpiece of Hungarian cinema. The Magyar Nemzeti Filmarchívum has already done another Gaál film, although that was an older transfer.

Yes, they don't always put English subtitles on the extras, but sometimes they stretch to those too - with particularly happy results in the case of The Red and the White (unreservedly recommended - much though I love Second Run on principle, the Hungarian edition is way out in front!).

Same here - mine came to a daunting-looking 35,704 forints, but that translated as a fraction under £100 for thirteen DVDs and a Blu-ray. So no complaints here!

Snap! (I snagged 16 titles) And I bet my postage charge was way more daunting than yours: more than two-thirds the cost of what I was buying, but the per-disc cost still works out to be ridiculously cheap.

Postage was a round 10,000 forints, so just under a third of the total. Which is why I always buy at least a dozen things at a time - and in turn why I only order from lira.hu once a year (if that).

That's nearly as bad as mine (15,000). If I'd taken the airmail option, I would have been paying more for postage than for goods. (So I could be in for a long wait.)

Blimey, that was quick - I may have paid through the nose for postage, but all fourteen discs have just turned up, exactly a week after I placed the order.

It even included the Blu-ray of Made in Hungaria (a very silly but rather fun Magyar 1950s rock'n'roll musical) that they told me was out of stock.

i hope Lívia Gyarmathy's A csalás gyönyöre (1992) can be released on dvd. i am not hungarian, but i think you hungarians know how wonderful a director Lívia Gyarmathy is!

Does anyone have experience with http://www.dvdbluray.hu shipping to the US? I'm trying to pick up the blu ray of Jankovics' The Tragedy of Man and it's on sale there through 12/31 and was wondering if they're a good option for buying Hungarian discs to be shipped overseas.

I finally got a copy of The Boys of Paul Street, through a seller on Amazon. Gloriously restored and highly recommended, though I must admit I have a slight preference for the Frank Borzage 1934 film No Greater Glory.
