Hot dog! So the English subtitles are aggreable? I was just contemplating restarting a half-finished subtitling for The Terrorizers I promised someone long ago (my apologies to the respective party), but this makes it obsolete.

hmm, maybe I'll reconsider the box buy after all...

No, I did too, but haven't had a chance to do more than pop them in the player for a quick glance. But I'm definitely seeing that motion problem too, so it's not your player. For what it's worth, my PS3 identifies the encoding on the BD as AVC, not MPEG-2. As for the English subtitles, the BD seems to use the same translation as the DVD from the old Hou boxset, but several misspellings have been fixed.

Yes, the subs are surprisingly good.

As the caps show, the image is quite good. But it does display jaggies, and then there's the motion issue. Still, it's a nice release to hold us over for the (inevitable?) deluxe edition by ... ?

I ordered the DUST IN THE WIND blu-ray from jsdvd. But some kind of error occurred with the third-party payment app, so the money was taken out of my account and sent, but the order did not go through or was not received on jsdvd's end (no confirmation email, and no record of the order under my account. It still shows the blu-ray as being in my "shopping cart"). I've sent jsdvd two emails, but no reply. It's been three days.

Anyone have a contact over there? Anyone else had a similar problem with them?

Does anyone know when Vive l'Amour is due out? I admire Ming's work, and I have always been frustrated at the shoddy non anamorphic transfers that have happened on his releases, so I would love to see this one.

Thanks

FYI "Tsai" is the family name, and Ming-Liang is the given name.

RE the aforementioned motion problem: I received the Terrorizers DVD & Dust in the Wind BD yesterday, examined them quickly, and immediately saw the problem - they didn't use the 3:2 pulldown to convert the 24 fps source to 30 fps required for NTSC playback; they simply duplicated every 4th frame. #-o It's exactly the same on the BD (which is 1080i60, BTW). It's a pity because otherwise the restorations look very nice... :(

Maybe MichaelB or Peerpee can help with this. Is this something that can be simply fixed with re-authoring / re-encoding, or does it compromise this particular transfer for other potential licensees as well? i.e. what are the chances that an improved version might be issued in another territory?

It seems they suffer from the so-called standards conversion (it's been a negligence by Sony Taiwan), so it WON'T affect other possible editions - IF, obviously, the staff does a proper job.
However, Sony announced they will release these titles worldwide; but, again, the question is "when?".

I have a strong suspicion that Sony is actually acting as the international distributor/sales agent, although that doesn't totally preclude them releasing them elsewhere (some of these films are already spoken for in certain countries). I wonder if the subtitles might be some clue as to which territories Sony will handle -- e.g. Dust in the Wind carrying Japanese subs, but not Spanish.

Now that Image and Sony are in bed together, Criterion damn well better be handling these...

The blu Hou is too blue.

I'd agree -- the color balance looks better on the old HH-issued DVD.

Yeah. I don't recall seeing any glowing blue shoes (last capture) the few times I've seen the film. Maybe this was a sci-fi subplot that we missed because of incorrect color timing, Michael? heh

I don't see the huge advancement in image that Gary sees (in fact, I think I still prefer the DVD image--the BD caps look jaggy and everything has a blue ring around it), but at least it's anamorphic.

The detail in nature imagery is the biggest difference in my eyes. The shots with trees / mountains in the background seem so much more alive (albeit oft bathed in a neon alien glow).

BTW, great BD even if it's too Blu(e) - and too expensive!

I had a hard time seeing it as well. I expected it to be much more glaring than it was, ultimately, and I tend to be extremely sensitive about proper film cadence and duplicate frames.

Maybe he watched it on an Oppo, they are quite good with jaggies and motion problems.

Maybe I should try it with my Sherwood set to 1080i.
