I see that Arte has Godard's Masculin-Feminin and Deux ou Trois Choses listed as new releases. I assume there are no subtitles, but does anyone know about the picture quality? Does Arte have a good track record in that regard? I was also wondering about their release of Resnais' Muriel. Any info would be much appreciated!

According to Jonathan Rosenbaum's "Global Discoveries on DVD" column in Cinema Scope (link), the sound on La Chant du styrène, included as an extra on the Muriel disc, was so badly out of sync with the picture that the disc has supposedly been pulled from the market at Resnais's request. I haven't heard of any problems with the main feature, though.

I'd love to hear your opinion once you get the discs, Arn. The Muriel issue explains why I can't find it on amazon.fr - though it still appears to available directly from Arte. I wondered why seemed to disappear a scant few months after its release. I hope they're fixing the problem instead of scrapping the disc.

BTW, they're both very positive.

I was too quick with my first reply. On the same date Weekend and Vivre sa vie (my life to live) will also be issued.

I received '2 ou 3 choses...' this morning. It looks quite good, the print used is fine and clean although the compression (and definition) is not the best. The extras are interesting, but as for the film, there are no subtitles. Arte has also included a great 44 pages booklet (all text from Alain Bergala, and reprints from articles published when the film was released).

As far as I know it's the producer's cut which means the completed song plays during the end credits - I don't remember if there were any other differences aside from that.Does anyone have the Region 1 DVD of this Godard film, and can tell me which version of the film it is and if it has the correct aspect ratio (and so on...)?

Also the opening titles say "Sympathy for the Devil" rather than "One Plus One," and have a different appearance than Godard's usual. Incidently, I have a Japanese DVD whose cover says "One Plus One" (in Godard's usual sixties font), but the actual film on the disc is the same old producer's cut with "Sympathy for the Devil" credits and the complete song at the end. Has anyone actually managed to find Godard's version?
Someone posted the news that THE JEAN-LUC GODARD COLLECTION VOL. 2 will be released in the UK on Feb. 22. The set will comprise: PIERROT LE FOU / MADE IN USA / FIRST NAME CARMEN.
So far I have only found it listed on one UK site: Play.Com. (With the same pre-order date). If this is true [I haven't found Miles at Isle of Wight confirmed yet] then this will be the first release on video in any English speaking country of MADE IN USA. I will definitely be buying this one. The other R2 Godards - like MASCULINE will probably be Criterions so I'd recommend waiting for R1 on those.

Thanks DB. I wonder if Warners, in the UK, have the rights to other Godard rarities. Imagine a Box [vol. 3] with UNE FEMME MARIEE & LA CHINOISE in it. My understanding is that the first film is in the "public domain" (if that is a feasible concept in these days). Finding the best source print of rare Godard films is what counts however.

I just watched this movie, and was just plain confused at the end when the colors appeared and the finished song played, I hadn't fully grasped the film yet and these things just pushed it out of my grasp.
Consulting Jean luc Godard Interviews I found that the finished song, the colors and the title were all the producers choice and that during a screening of the producers version Godard punched Iain Quarrier (his producer) in the face and told the audience to get a refund and donate their money to the Eldridge Cleaver Fund, threatening those who didn't to be bourgeois fascists.
The dvd goes even further with contradicting Godard's message by being sold as a Rolling Stones movie usually placed in the music dvd section of stores. The dvd features a music video of some reworking of the song with NERD or something like that. It had absolutely nothing to do with Godard or the movie.
I'd love to see the real version of this movie available on dvd

According to Amazon, Hail Mary was released on DVD this past week. Does anyone know of any reviews, or has anyone purchased it? There seems to be so little coverage of this disc online that I somewhat doubt its existence, or at least fear the worst, that it's some kind of VHS-port hack job. I've never heard of the company putting it out, either, Jef Films. Here's the link.

Judging from the reviews of their other releases (just search under the film company's name on amazon, & there you go), it seems to point to VHS-hack job territory. I'm content with my dubbed vhs copy, which didn't cost me $24.95. It's too bad any other company hasn't stepped foreward with this title, a shame, really. Think of the extras! Ebert's 1 1/2 star review! The catholic church & ensuing protest footage! A newly taped interview of Godard (3 minutes long, or maybe just him giving a bronx cheer and walking off)! Maybe a roundtable with actual protesters who were on the picket lines in front of movie theaters, and why they hated it so much and how it changed their lives! A free basketball shrinkwrapped on the first 1000 copies! I can't wait.

Yes, please! Somebody buy this or rent this and let us know. I can add one piece of helpful info to look out for: As with a lot of Godard, the correct aspect ratio for this film is 1.33.
(Per Bordwell and Thompson's "Film History: An Introduction" which has a color frame enlargement (from the actual film print) of a particular shot, the balance of which you can obviously see would be harmed by cropping it to a 1.66 or 1.85. )
