The 1960 Mini-List

#1 Post by swo17 » Mon Jan 31, 2022 3:47 am

RESULTS

Below is a list of films you can vote for in this mini-list that we've been discussing in the Lists Project thread. If you want to be able to vote for something that isn't listed here, you need to ask me to add it to the list. The only reason I won't do so is if I deem that it belongs in another year. This will generally be based on IMDb year but I may make exceptions as needed to make sure that every film is eligible in one year and in only one year. I am the ultimate arbiter of year assignments.

Discussion for this mini-list and requests for additions to the list of films below will run until March 31. On April 1 I will create a form for voting that will allow you to populate anything between a top 10 and a top 25 from among the films listed below. You will have until the end of the day April 8 to submit a ballot that way. If you don't see a certain film listed below, you won't be able to vote for it, so please speak up before March 31 to avoid disappointment.

Re: The 1960s List: Discussion and Suggestions

#2 Post by domino harvey » Mon Jan 31, 2022 4:07 am

I have a viewing list of a little over a hundred titles now, many of which aren’t on your list. But I checked IMDB this evening for all of them. I don’t know that I’ll actually vote for any of them yet but do you really want all that? Also, a dedicated thread (that can be folded back into this one when done, if desired) would be helpful

Wait and see if you think they're actually contenders before asking me to add them

Cool, will do. Thanks for the threadsplit and for making my idle chatter reality!

According to Letterboxd I’ve only rated 14 films from 1960 five stars, so I have lots of room in the back half of my list for new discoveries or any number of great films I’ve already seen that wouldn’t otherwise quite make my full decade list

Apparently I loved School for Scoundrels when I watched it, but have no memory of when or where I did.

Is that a request to add the film to my master list?

OK I'll add it, but for the record I'm not trying to gather a comprehensive list of every eligible title (as I've said elsewhere, IMDb identifies almost 5,000 such titles) but rather a manageable list of everything any participant wants to vote for. This starting point is a mix of titles that have previously received votes in some iteration of the '60s list, and a judgmental culling of titles I'm familiar with that I expect to have some kind of following here

I would vote for Robert Hossein's Les Scélérats/The Wretches, which is the only title from my masterlist I don't see on yours

Is it possible to get the exact start and end date for this project?

Also, apart from obvious classics, I'd be interested in hearing about recommendations that are currently available on disc.

I would be interested in recommendations for shorts/experimental works that might otherwise be overlooked (*cough* swo)- as well as any rare nouvelle vague backchannel films that might otherwise be overlooked (*cough* domino), but of course this can wait for the actual project to start- just food for thought

Donen's The Grass Is Greener could possibly be added.

A strong movie which could possibly make the back end of my list. Hossein is all over the place as a director but this one is a real success

It's happening right now! It will tentatively run until the end of February but if we get to that point and at least three people ask for a two-week extension I'll grant it. During the project you can make recommendations and also request additions to the master list, but you can't actually vote until I publish the poll

Arnulf Rainer is a big deal, which you'll probably appreciate as it's very much in the vein of The Flicker. That's all I've got for now

Unfortunately that's too short notice for me to order, receive and then watch new movies. I'll go with the films I've already seen. However if we can know ahead if it's extended to, say, end of March, then I'll gladly punish the credit card again.

I would definitely make time for:

Devi
The White Dove
L'amour existe (surprised you haven't already seen this!)

Also, worst case scenario if you watch something that I don't approve for 1960 is that I probably approve it for 1961, assuming we like this enough to keep going with it. Or actually, worst case scenario is I say it's from the 1950s and so you will have watched it for absolutely nothing

It's possible that I have, but when I first started logging movies I didn't log shorts and that's when I would have been first going through Pialat, so I'm not sure if I have or not. I don't remember it at any rate!

Ohh The Housemaid is great- and wasn't on my list for some reason. A clear influence on Parasite, which I know has been outright stated by Bong, but still worth mentioning
