Thanks to everyone for your participation this round. I'll be releasing the results shortly in the next three posts. Here again is a guide to what the figures listed after each film represent, each separated with a slash mark:

1. Total points (50 for each #1 placement, 49 for each #2, etc.)
2. Number of lists the film appeared on (out of 24 submitted). If the film appeared in anyone's top 10, the number of top 10 appearances is also denoted in parentheses.
3. Highest placement of the film on any one list. If more than one person ranked the film this high, this is also denoted in parentheses.
4. Change in position from the 2009 list, with movements of 10 or more highlighted.

So for example, the 290/7(5)/4(x3)/-3 shown for Sátántangó means that it scored 290 points and appeared on seven lists (and five top 10s), with three people ranking it as high as #4. The film also moved down three positions from its placement on the 2009 list.

For the list of orphans, only figure #3 is displayed (the highest rank, not the score given).

If anyone would like me to PM them a list of how all of their picks fared in the overall tally (rather than having to scour through all of the results) it's a simple thing for me to do. Just let me know.

I'll unlock the 2000s thread in the next little while. In the meantime, feel free to continue discussion in this thread regarding the results of the 1990s project and to share your individual lists (including defenses of your poor-faring favorites).

And here are the films that held the #1 spot at certain points during tabulation. Granted, this has a lot to do with the order in which lists were submitted, but maybe it's still of interest to some people?

Great work, Swo!

Top Ten + Orphans:
1. Short Cuts (Robert Altman, 1993)
2. Lost Highway (David Lynch, 1997)
3. Beau Travail (Claire Denis, 1999)
4. Hana-bi/Fireworks (Takeshi Kitano, 1997)
5. The Thin Red Line (Terrence Malick, 1998)
6. Eyes Wide Shut (Stanley Kubrick, 1999)
7. Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me (David Lynch, 1992)
8. Dead Man (Jim Jarmusch, 1995)
9. Barton Fink (Joel Coen, 1991)
10. Rushmore (Wes Anderson, 1998)

14. The Butcher Boy (Neil Jordan, 1997)
15. Eggs (Bent Hamer, 1995)
27. En dag til i solen/Water Easy Reach (Bent Hamer, 1998)
28. Kikujirô no natsu/Kikujiro (Takeshi Kitano, 1999)
34. Ravenous (Antonia Bird, 1999)

38. The General (John Boorman, 1998)
42. Trespass (Walter Hill, 1992)
50. The Hunt for Red October (John McTiernan, 1990)

Surprised no. 14 and 34 ended up as orphans. The latter has it's fans here and the former did pretty well last round, I seem to recall.

It looks like there were 31(!) fewer lists submitted this time than during the last round, so there are probably plenty of orphans out there now that have support from people that just didn't vote. By the same token, lots of films were able to make the top 100 with only marginal support--the cutoff to make the top 100 was 197 points last time while now it's only 82.

Wow, why such a low number of submissions? I was shocked to see how few points were required for the top positions. What an odd list.

Maybe many more of us need to make an effort to drum up interest in the project, otherwise it may start to fizzle out.

I voted for a different Neil Jordan film (The End of the Affair, which was also an orphan). I really like the Butcher Boy though - it's very much one of the more personal lower budget movies that Jordan can make precisely because he directs such ropey American films.

Well, it was a bit lower participation than I'm used to seeing, but the 55 that participated last round was, as I understand, unprecedentedly high.

Thanks swo. There are the usual delightful surprises, terrible disappointments and matters of utter confusion.

If the lower participation holds for the 00s list, maybe we should take a break with the decades lists for a while before commencing a new round - if people want to have a new round of them.

I haven't got that much to say about my list, because I said it all last time, and my selections have moved around rather than changed radically, but here's my top twenty, also-rans and orphans:

TOP TWENTY

1. A Brighter Summer Day (Edward Yang, 1991) – still completely unavailable, and more appropriately placed for an unavailable film. The higher ranking last time was such a fluke I was worried people would think I was cooking the books! (In the early counting of the vote it even topped the list for quite a while.)
2. Die Zweite Heimat (Reitz, 1993) – ORPHAN. Not too surprising. Did anybody actually get around to watching this? It’s well worth setting aside a few weeks of your life to do so, and you don’t need to have seen the first Heimat beforehand.
3. Life and Nothing More (Abbas Kiarostami, 1991)
4. Satantango (Bela Tarr, 1994)
5. Nenette et Boni (Claire Denis, 1996)
6. Van Gogh (Maurice Pialat, 1991) – ALSO-RAN
7. The Quince Tree Sun (Victor Erice, 1992)
8. Sink or Swim (Su Friedrich, 1990) – Delighted to see this surge up the list.
9. The Power of Kangwon Province (Hong Sang-soo, 1998)
10. Hear My Cry (Maciej Drygas, 1991) – Also heartening to see this amazing film gain some traction.
11. In That Country (Lidia Bobrova, 1997) – ORPHAN. Second Run, if you’re listening, you need to get this film out before the next 90s list project!
12. The Guard (Aleksandr Rogozhkin, 1990) – ORPHAN. Ditto. There’s such a wealth of fantastic post-Soviet filmmaking that’s completely unavailable on home video, even in its homeland.
13. A Moment of Innocence (Mohsen Makhmalbaf, 1996)
14. Close Up (Abbas Kiarostami, 1990)
15. Goodbye, South, Goodbye (Hou Hsiao-hsien, 1996) – ALSO-RAN. Probably my favourite Hou film of them all, sorry top see it fall off the edge of the world this time.
16. Buffalo 66 (Vincent Gallo, 1998)
17. Black Ice (Stan Brakhage, 1994) – ALSO-RAN
18. Time Regained (Raul Ruiz, 1999) – ORPHAN. What the fuck? Did somebody slip Rohypnol in your crumby tea?
19. Ashes of Time (Wong Kar-wai, 1994) – ALSO-RAN
20. Screen Play (Barry Purves, 1992) – ORPHAN. I raved about this marvel somewhere, maybe in the animation thread. There’s a superb DVD of Purves’ work now available, so check it out.

OTHER ALSO-RANS

23. Fugue (Schwizgebel, 1998) – I forgot about this completely until Swo reminded me, so thanks swo. Fortunately, one of my selections was ineligible, so this could sneak into its spot.
24. L’eau froid (Olivier Assayas, 1994)
26. Labyrinth of Dreams (Ishii, 1997) – At least it’s not an orphan this time! Lots of great Japanese cinema from this period is unavailable as well, with Ishii and Yanagimachi at the top of that list.
29. Twilight (Feher, 1990) – I think this was the only brand new discovery to make my list this time (though a number of films were dredged up from the 50+ ranks from last time). Thanks again, swo!
32. Irma Vep (Olivier Assayas, 1996)
38. Alone: Life Wastes Andy Hardy (Martin Arnold, 1998)
43. Sugar Water (Michel Gondry, 1996)
45. I Can’t Sleep (Claire Denis, 1994)
47. Outer Space (Peter Tscerkassky, 1999)

OTHER ORPHANS

25. US Go Home (Denis, 1994)
27. Time Indefinite (Ross McElwee, 1994)
30. An Independent Life (Vitaly Kanevsky, 1992) – It seems like somebody dug a hole on the steppe and buried this film as soon as it completed the festival circuit. One of the most brain-bending ‘sequels’(of Freeze, Die, Come to Life) I’ve ever seen.
31. Rules of the Road (Su Friedrich, 1993)
33. A Confucian Confusion (Yang, 1994)
34. Mahjong (Yang, 1996)
35. Rainclouds Over Wushan (Zhang Ming, 1995) – I’ve never heard anything more from Zhang, so I’m tentatively granting auteur status for this strange, dark, funny film to writer Zhu Wen, whose haunting, Kafkaesque South of the Clouds will almost certainly be making my 00s list.
39. A Scene at the Sea (Kitano Takeshi, 1991)
44. The Boys (Rowan Woods, 1998)
46. Three Stories (Kira Muratova, 1997)
48. Hotel E (Priit Parn, 1992) - Awesome complete Parn DVD set now available - grab it!
50. Ali Click (Jerome Lefdup / Lari Flash / Brian Eno, 1992)

Thanks a lot for the hard work, swo, as always!

Actually, I'm pleasantly surprised by the final outcome. It's very good to see La belle noiseuse at least in the top twenty now, and also that Kiarostami seems to have fared better than the last time around. Best of all is that Oliveira made it in the top 100, and I guess if his work wasn't so very hard to find, he might have fared even better. In this respect, I must say that unfortunately I only managed to see his Inquietude this evening, which only yesterday would have caused a PM with a request to change my already submitted list: probably the quintessence of all of the director's styles and one of the greatest films of the 90s, but well... too late. Sorry to whoever it was that voted for it; it doesn't deserve to be an orphan, for sure.

Also, I wasn't aware that Breaking the Waves must have figured so low on the last list that even with a +36 it only ended up as #42 this time. Similarly, the improved result for Erice's Quince Tree Sun. I'm also glad that Vinterberg's The Celebration made a big jump up: I hadn't seen this film before the listmaking, but was completely floored by it (though perhaps not in an exactly pleasant way).

On the downside: is it really possible that I'm the only one who appreciates Lars von Trier's The Idiots, one of the director's most provocative and at the same time most deeply humanistic films? I really thought this one was on the list without any doubt; and that's not even counting its historical importance as one of the few 'Dogma' films (al)most true to the bible. And please explain why the weakest film Lynch ever made (apart from "Dune", of course) ranks higher than Lost Highway, and his second-weakest ranks higher than The Straight Story....

I feel guilty for not having participated in this or the last couple of projects, even though I never said much. I've been in the middle of a complicated and drawn-out move. But I read these discussions religiously. To be honest, I feel as if I still have so much of the regular cinematic canon yet to see -- helped along by stuff like these lists projects -- that I tend to fear my contributions would be rather trite. But if it would help ensure that these lists will continue being made and discussed, I would try to make a point to be more involved. (Among other problems, one thing is that I seldom seem to have time to watch more than three or four movies in a given week! Dunno how y'all do it, honestly.)

At any rate, a general suggestion that may not really belong here and if not I'm sorry. I know the idea of making the lists project public has been brought up before, but I really think that if it were something someone didn't have to sign up for the board in order to see, it might increase interest and visibility quite a bit -- I can imagine it being a good reason for a few potential good members to sign up for the board in the first place. If past discussions hinged on the illusion of semi-privacy, maybe the master lists thread could be public along with just whatever current discussion threads are happening?

I hope swo, dom, zedz, and everyone else aren't discouraged by the decreased participation, because you all do work that a lot of us out here in lurk-land find very helpful and informative. Many thanks.

Didn't submit this time because I just haven't had time to view a lot lately and felt I couldn't do the 90s justice, but then again I wish I had supported titles on my provisional top 50 that fell off the final list, namely Time Regained (14), Fallen Angels (21), Ed Wood (22), Irma Vep (25) and Groundhog Day (39). Guess I should have just sent it anyway. On to the oughts.

This could work, or it could backfire spectacularly. The worst case scenario for increased participation is a vote that increases the compiler's workload tenfold and delivers a list that looks like every other best-of-the-decade list ever published.

The other big risk is that every other website, blog and messageboard in the universe is list-crazy, and in the overwhelming majority of cases lists are met with more lists and conversation and discussion die a pauper's death. This forum has traditionally been anti-list and pro-discussion (hey! remember when lists were actually banned here?), and this project has always been primarily a pretext for generating discussion rather than a list-for-list's-sake exercise - which is one of the reasons that the project has been semi-covert. If we're going to proclaim far and wide what we're all about, posting a list may be a hugely counter-productive way of doing so.

Having compiled the lists for one cycle, I'm pleased to report that just about every list submitted is endearingly eccentric.* The more lists are submitted, the more the final list ends up reflecting The Movies Everybody Has Seen rather than The Movies We're Really Passionate About. That's the nature of these kinds of exercises, but it also makes the aggregate list in a way peculiarly unrepresentative of the individual lists and passions that generated it, so I'm happy that the finished lists don't take on any kind of monolithic 'representative' presence and continue to be bare stages for discussions of what has been left out this time around.

* the only time this wasn't the case, and the only time I've rejected a list, was at the very start of the previous 2000s list. As soon as the 1990s list was posted and the 2000s discussion was opened, a brand new member sent me his top fifty list (all Hollywood films) along with an apology that some of the films towards the bottom of the list he didn't even like very much, but he hadn't seen any more that could be included. I told him that there was going to be six (nine?) months of discussion and suggestions that he could follow so that he could at least fill his list with films he actually liked, and that he should resubmit the list closer to the deadline, but I don't think he did.

Looking at this master list, it's amazing how much you can just plain forget or overlook. I was very happy to see somebody actually ranked Beth B's Two Small Bodies for instance and would have done so myself if I had thought of it. Same with Jarman's The Garden. Meanwhile, I ran out of room while I was struggling to fit Mann's The Insider on here and somehow completely forgot about Ridley's Reflecting Skin which certainly would have ranked otherwise and deserves to be somewhere on the list. Oh well. My list with some accompanying explanations and annotations to note Orphan or Also-Ran status:

1. Vale Abraão (Oliveira, '93): There was never any doubt where this would place. Frankly, for me, it's this and then the rest of the world.
2. Mindwalk (Capra, '90)--Orphan
3. An Ambush of Ghosts (Lewis, '93)--Orphan: Quite possibly the most impossible to find and see film that anyone listed as it's never received an official release and has only been screened a few times since its Sundance premiere. Seeing this was like a Grail Quest and I managed it back in '01 at a USC screening attended by the director and cinematographer. Since then I've been on a different sort of quest to get it released in some way though that seems, for whatever reason, almost impossible. And that's uniquely depressing as this is indeed a great film, an American Greenaway spliced with a pre-Fincher dark and brooding style but with far greater emotional reach and resonance than either (as Lewis said to me every element here went "hell-for-leather").
4. Lake Consequence (Eisenman, '93)--Orphan: A film so risible and instantaneously dismissible in its superficial narrative details that I rarely make the effort to rally on its behalf but perhaps I should. The best Zalman King film that Zalman King himself did not direct (he produced it and co-wrote it). It's rigorous myth making via a flow of images of crystallized perfection. All of this takes the form of a soft core fantasy romance which I'm sure will inherently turn off many prospective viewers but it should not because there is real courage in taking this material as far as Eisenman and company do here--it transforms the form into something else, something we have not seen before or considered in this way. First film by Harris Savides as well and, though he downplayed it later, it remains among his greatest work.
5. Inquietude (Oliveira, '98)--Orphan: Good to know that you would have voted for this, Tommaso. It's hard for me to rank Oliveira's work, as will be obvious in this list, but when I get serious about it I would probably place this one above the bulk of the rest from this decade for the reasons you mention. It's more formally inventive and innovative than some, at least in terms of structure, and the three part work allows it to distill his themes in unique ways while challenging us in others.
6. The Wind Will Carry Us (Kiarostami, '99)
7. Flowers of Shanghai (Hou, '98)
8. The Thin Red Line (Malick, '98)
9. The Convent (Oliveira, '95)
10. Ulysses' Gaze (Angelopoulos, '95)--Also-Ran: Kind of surprised that this didn't get more votes. For me it really could have been either this or Suspended Step but this one simply means more to me personally having been my first exposure to Angelopoulos.
11. Beau Travail (Denis, '99)
12. Party (Oliveira, '96)--Orphan: Debated about switching this around with The Convent but didn't because I think that's a more formally innovative and audacious work than this. Otherwise, about equal. There is a way too, it has to be admitted, that as much as I love MO's collaborations with Agustina Bessa-Luis and as great and rich as I think those are, the films like this one that give over almost completely to her voice via dialogue scenes do ultimately run the risk of steam rolling Oliveira's own technique. Here his contribution is mostly subtle refinements as is perhaps fitting, accents to the framing and within the frame.
13. Bitter Moon (Polanski '92)--Also-Ran: My favorite Polanski. Just watched it again the other day and it only served to confirm that. Hope to see this one do better in the votes in the future.
14. Satantango (Tarr, '94): Haven't seen it in a decade but really never need to see it again.
15. La lettre (Oliveira, '99)--Orphan: Another masterpiece but one that seems perhaps the most indicative of Oliveira's own perspective. It's not a collaboration and it is his ultra-unique take on adaptation of classic literature. His language is less dense than that of Bessa-Luis and as such there's a lighter touch involved that allows for more space and room to reflect as distinguished from the intensity of actively working through ideas. Complex in a more subtle, quiet way.
16. The Quince Tree Sun (Erice, '92)
17. Non (Oliveira, '90)--Orphan
18. The Blood Oranges (Haas, '97)--Orphan
19. Liebestraum (Figgis, '91)--Orphan
20. Eyes Wide Shut (Kubrick, '99)
21. Magnolia (Anderson, '99)
22. Light Sleeper (Schrader, '92)--Also-Ran
23. Fight Club (Fincher, '99)
24. JFK (Stone, '91)
25. Until the End of the World (Wenders, '91)--Also-Ran: Here I guess I really mean the expanded "director's cut" which is so glorious but the original truncated theatrical is still pretty awesome and has a very real place in my heart. This was when Wenders' hopeful humanist optimism was most affecting.
26. Closet Land (Bharadwaj, '91)--Orphan: The two best performances of '91 (not Foster and Hopkins)
27. 1492: Conquest of Paradise (Scott, 92)--Orphan: More and more this one seems to me to be Scott's finest film of the 90's, certainly far more so than the now fading Thelma & Louise. Beautiful beyond measure.
28. Voyage to the Beginning of the World (Oliveira, '97)--Also-Ran
29. Miller's Crossing (Coens, '90)
30. Twin Peaks pilot (Lynch, '90)--Also-Ran: Hard to pick between this and FWWM but if I had to I would go with this as Lynch's best work from the decade simply because it's utterly astonishing and revelatory to watch him do his thing in such a subdued and indirect register. Also, among his most beautiful films.
31. Bliss (Young, '97)--Orphan: A masterpiece that continues to seek out its audience. Young unfortunately has never made another film and that is a great loss as this one is so singular and grand an accomplishment. As with Lake Consequence, this film risks being risible in its story of a married couple seeking assistance from a sex therapist who "operates on the edge of the law" but wisely Young allows for comedy while at the same time taking the idea of sexual healing and the possibilities of eros very seriously.
32. The Doom Generation (Araki, '95)--Orphan: Really thought this would do better. Maybe we're "past all that"? If so then this film for me still stands as among the very best testaments to the temperament of its time, particularly in the ending with its raw, suddenly very real violence as the greatest of disillusionment.
33. The Sheltering Sky (Bertolucci, '90)--Also-Ran: Because the surface hides so much.
34. Day of Despair (Oliveira, '92)
35. Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me (Lynch, '92): Because every personal holocaust is a mythic and cosmic Holocaust.
36. Kasaba (Ceylan, '97)--Orphan: Not surprised that this continues to be overlooked but for me this and Anatolia are Ceylan's greatest films, his most profound achievements. Here he's even more obviously working in the key of Kiarostami but he makes that his own through photography and insight into the community and characters.
37. Sicilia! (Straub/Huillet, '98)--Also-Ran
38. Through the Olive Trees (Kiarostami, '94)
39. No Fear, No Die (Denis, '90)--Orphan: I guarantee that this would do way better in the count if it would ever get a decent release outside of France.
40. Naked Lunch (Cronenberg, '91)--Also-Ran: Could have just as easily been Crash here. A coin flip decision. Both are superb examples of idiosyncratic and distinctive adaptation.
41. Dangerous Game (Ferrara, '93)--Orphan: Hard to pick a favorite Ferrara but this one again just seems to me to be the best, most representative one. The intensely meta scenario goes very far and is almost entirely successful in what becomes more and more perilous intellectual tight rope walking. This could fall into pure farce at any moment but never does.
42. Life and Nothing More (Kiarostami, '92)
43. Exotica (Egoyan, '94): Could have just as easily been The Adjuster. Another coin flip.
44. Whispering Pages (Sokurov, '94)--Also-Ran
45. Prospero's Books (Greenaway, '91)--Also-Ran: I still think that Baby of Macon may be PG's very best, most perfectly complete film and the one that represents him best philosophically as well but frankly I just don't like it much and that does make a difference. At a certain point a personal philosophy expressed brilliantly and thoroughly may still simply turn you off if you're not real receptive to it. Meanwhile, Prospero is a masterpiece that is easier to get behind, its challenges and accomplishments just about as perfectly realized as is possible but less of an overwhelming assault upon the viewer than BoM. As a friends says too, Prospero's Books is one of the greatest fantasy films ever made; it should be a model for that form but is somehow instead considered too "out there" when in fact that's exactly what should be learned from it.
46. Cremaster 2 (Barney, '99)--Orphan
47. The Myth of Fingerprints (Freundlich, '97)--Orphan: An even better Ordinary People with a profound understanding and respect for the ways in which simple moments can affect lives.
48. Institute Benjamenta (Quays, '95)--Also-Ran
49. Wrony (Kedzierzawska, '94)--Also-Ran: Glad to see someone else voted for this. As with Ceylan's Kasaba, another under seen masterful representation of children and a child's eye view of the world.
50. Ashes of Time (Wong, '94)--Also-Ran

I think the reason (or part of the reason) it went from Also-Ran last time to Orphan this time was that I voted for it last time but not this time. I still like it enough that I watched it again for this round and found that for whatever reason I didn't find it as striking as the first time I saw it, which may be either a kind of higher hurdle that films have to rise above to be one of those films that continue to give as engaging or rewarding an experience on being rewatched after they're already familiar that they did the first time, or a failure on my part to notice new things in it and have a growing appreciation of it. It's still the same great film it was when it came out, and I probably should have voted for it again, but there's never enough spots for everything, so I have to play favorites in sometimes totally subjective and unreasonable ways. I'm saying all this not to account for leaving this particular film off my list but just to ruminate on my process of coming up with the ranked list, which I never feel satisfied with.

Of my orphans, I guess I'm most surprised by the absence of The Apostle. This was the highest placed 'new' film and had I not shown so much loyalty to the established films I've loved for years, this could have placed even higher. Robert Duvall gives one of the best performances I saw in the entire decade, and the film is made with such sensitivity and balance. It would be easy for Sonny to be a charlatan or con man, but Duvall writes and performs him as a good but conflicted man.

Gattaca I thought might have its fans, but I could imagine it not making many lists. It's not even like it was high in mind.

They're quite obscure movies, but if anyone can dig out Garage Olimpo and Death on a Full Moon Day (from Sri Lanka), I'd heartily recommend these.

Regarding the also rans, I know Funny Games gets a mixed reaction from the board and critics. Haneke should have an excellent 00s though. I was glad to see someone else vote for Cabaret Balkan, whose pessimistic look at mid 90s Serbia running high on machismo and aggression contrasts nicely with Underground.

I always like seeing the shifting patterns in voting. Trends come and go quite a bit over five years or so.

Regrets? Not seeing Van Gogh in time. I meant to then forgot, which is annoying as I really love most of the other Pialat films I've seen!
