I've actually found it odd that that is the McLaren that people seem so universally behind as that's one of the least interesting to me. The more structurally based films like Spheres and the lines films strike me as more effective.

That was bad science with poorly controlled variables and you know it.

Has anyone else gotten to check out Sylvain Chomet's 1998 short, The Old Woman and the Pigeons? It has all of the stylistic fascination with grotesque, absurd caricatures on display in his later features paired with a truly dark comedy - darker than Triplets and more comedic than The Illusionist. It reminds me a little of Delicatessen in its rendering of the dark backstreets of Paris and the
SpoilerShow
overtures of cannibalism played for a laugh.

Update: I've compiled 7 of the 9 lists I've received, and we're up to 69 that can end up on the list! Of course, the lowest one has eight points, but still.

My apologies for having not contributed sooner.

Since there hasn't been much love for the Soviet Animated Propaganda set (other than Knives' recommendation).
Might I quickly suggest the following two films (the first is about 2 minutes, the second about 4, so you have no excuse not to see them!):

Black and White (Chernoe i beloe, 1932)
RESULTS OF THE XII PARTY CONGRESS OF COOPERATION (JOIN THE COOPERATIVE) (1925)

Also, nobody has mentioned Lutz Dammbeck? I bought the Edition Filmmuseum set awhile back, and its been a great treasure trove.
For those who do own the set, at least check out Metamorphosis I (1979) - I can't find it on youtube, so you're out of luck if you don't own the set.

I'm really looking forward to seeing the results, but I thought that the deadline was 7/1. Did it get changed or am I imagining things again?

I have a feeling that my list will be more than half orphans. I stuck with my pledge to only include features, but in all honesty it was running very thin at the end.

It's now Saturday (July 6). The deadlines for List Project lists always get shuffled, but the first post will reflect the changes discussed elsewhere

I've just submitted my list, with apologies for not having had the chance to do many write ups for this subject, but I've been greatly enjoying the discussion here, and it has left me with a long list of titles!

Anyway on going through the films just outside my top 50 I knocked out Rintaro's anime film Metropolis from 2001, but I thought that the dying moments of the project might be just the right time to link to a video of the final section of the film (warning: major spoilers for the film!), that has a lovely marriage of the usual gloriously epic anime destruction (which often reminds me of the way that I used to play 'disaster films' with Lego sets as a kid!) played out to a Ray Charles song.

It is a great climax to the film - if we ever do a 'best use of music in a scene' list, as opposed to pure musicals, this moment would be sure to be near the top of my list!

With three lists in my inbox yet to count, and whatever else comes in over the next 22 hours, we've officially broken 100 titles. Plus, 73 of them have more than 50 points!

She's been quietly remastering her films and uploading them to Vimeo over the past year, most of them since this project started. A few of my favorites from what I've seen: Mutations, Bagatelles, Pixillation
In case anyone cares, I recently discovered that Mutations is included on this DVD, on account of its being scored by Jean-Claude Risset. I ultimately decided that the film wasn't quite animation enough to make my list, though Bagatelles squeaked by.

Just submitted. Clearly I didn't watch enough from the 1990s because I cannot believe that animation fell off that drastically after the 1980s, but nothing I could remember seeing from the decade stood out as being one of my 50 all-time favorites. I've still never seen Only Yesterday, so I need to fill that hole and others from this decade as well.

39 shorts
11 features

1900-1909: 1
1910s: zero
1920s: 1
1930s: 6
1940s: 19
1950s: 5
1960s: 3
1970s: 2
1980s: 10
1990s: zero (!)
2000-2009: 3

I ended up with a pretty even split by decade I think: 1890s 1, 1900s 1, 1910s 1, 1920s 2, 1930s 5, 1940s 7, 1950s 5, 1960s 5, 1970s 5, 1980s 8, 1990s 5, 2000s 4, 2010s 1

I had 45 shorts on my list, because someone's got to balance out all of you crazy feature-centric people.

Haha, not to go too into detail yet, but let's just say that it would be more accurate to claim that the feature-centric people are trying vainly to balance out the overwhelming tide of shorts

The Quays have done some of their best work post '80s so that should have been in play assuming you've seen enough (they certainly took my number one spot with one of their most recent films). Highest feature was at number ten with only nine features (plus an OVA).

Ugh! Crac! an orphan? I feel guilty of not having voted for it. I was also thinking of voting for The Street (that's Caroline Leaf's short, isn't it?).

So I've got 20 titles in the list, 15 also-rans and 15 orphans.

But it's certainly the first time I've seen everything that made a list (when it's usually something like a third or less) ! ... Except one title, I haven't seen A Scanner Darkly. Will do next week!
