Re: 1960s List Discussion and Suggestions
Playtime continued the trend of Tati disappointments, as we were talking about in the BFI thread. I was certain that I was going to love his work, especially Playtime based on the premise. That just came off as completely self-indulgent, however. I even watched his first three features again this week to give them another chance. Not quite my cup of tea.

Re: 1960s List Discussion and Suggestions
Nah... Even though "Playtime" didn't make it onto my list, I find it completely stunning in its visual inventiveness and dark humour. It's probably my favourite Tati. Behind all the over-the-top absurdity Tati is a really great filmmaker, and I'm surprised that you don't like or at least somewhat admire what he did. Tati isn't necessarily my kind of cinema, either, but somehow I feel a deep respect for the man. His films are unlike anybody elses's.

Re: 1960s List Discussion and Suggestions
Oh, you can certainly appreciate his unique style. I've just found all of his features to be stretched out to breaking point. There's parts of them that are crafted magnificently. I love Mon oncle when the dog locks them in the garage. Genius, even though everyone sees it coming. The running joke with the fountain is witty too, but these moments are too few and far between for me.

Re: 1960s List Discussion and Suggestions
I have one vote each for The Netherlands and Belgium (and they're not pity votes, I genuinely consider 'em great films!)
Find it a bit hard to comprehend how some might conceive the 60s as the weakest decade for German film - it doesn't reach the dizzying heights of the 70s, but surely beats the 50s, 80s (except for the first few years maybe), 90s and 2000s.
Narrowly fell of mine (the 50-60 bracket). Très drôle indeed.Michael Kerpan wrote:Just saw Les Tontons Flingueurs for the first time -- and it will likely make my list -- laughed my ass off.
Signs of Life is not only my highest ranking Herzog or German film, it's my best film of the decade.zedz wrote:In case nobody's mentioned it yet, Signs of Life will be my highest ranking German film.knives wrote:I took nearly every German rec from this thread so any lack of success is on the foot of those who didn't recommend.

Re: 1960s List Discussion and Suggestions
I'm sure all of these statistics are just as fascinating to everyone else as they are to the people making them. Here are some of my own, as my list currently stands:
Films in the Criterion Collection: 22
Films not yet released on DVD: 2
Films not yet released in R1: 10
Films previously released but currently OOP in R1: 12 (depressing)
Films without spoken dialogue: 12
Black & white (or mostly B&W) films: 34
Films from the last half of the decade: 33
Films under 40 minutes long: 11
Films more than 2-½ hours long: 4
Actor with the most appearances on my list: Ninetto Davoli (of course)
My top five countries are (in order): France, Italy, the USA, Czechoslovakia, and the UK.

Well, this is so bonkers how can I resist? Also, I get to test my theory that swo and I are basically the same person.swo17 wrote:I'm sure all of these statistics are just as fascinating to everyone else as they are to the people making them. Here are some of my own, as my list currently stands:

Films not yet released in R1: Who knows? Who cares?
Films previously released but currently OOP in R1: Who knows? Who cares?
I don't lose sleep keeping track of what films are currently available on another continent, so instead, I counted the number of films I have on DVD that were issued in non-English-speaking countries: 12
Films without spoken dialogue: 14 (assuming we're using the same criteria)
Black & white (or mostly B&W) films: 34 (Bingo! Do I win a prize? Oh, looks like I get a 'bonus category')
BONUS CATEGORY: Entirely black or white films: 1
Films from the last half of the decade: 37
Films under 40 minutes long: 10
Films more than 2-½ hours long: 3
Actor with the most appearances on my list: With two films apiece, this seems to be a huge tie between Kei Sato, Mariko Okada, Alain Delon and a shitload of Hungarians.
My top five countries are (in order): asked and answered.
Conclusion: yes, swo and I are basically the same person, except for the Criterion bit.

I meant characters speaking on camera. (A few of mine do include spoken narration.) If we were the same person you would know that.zedz wrote:Films without spoken dialogue: 14 (assuming we're using the same criteria)
Also, by my count, you have 14 films in the Collection including announcements up through yesterday, and another 6 if you include films that Criterion streams on Hulu or that we otherwise know are forthcoming. And I didn't even have to dig through your trash to find this information!

Re: 1960s List Discussion and Suggestions
As usual with these decade lists i start off with good intentions and draw up short lists etc but just get overwhelmed trying to rank them. However I do like sneeking into the library to peek over other people's shoulders to get hints for hidden gems. I also particularly like this new game and for the record my perfunctory listing reveals 6 Stanleys , but to Domino's chagrin perhaps, no Kramer
