I don't necessarily buy into the belief that spine 1000 will be anything special––maybe it will, maybe it won't––but you'd think that a company like Criterion which is by far the most fetishistic about its presentation in my opinion would be a bit more invested in its cherishing of certain milestones like the 1000th spine.

They should just make it the final physical release before The Criterion Channel becomes the one and only home of The Criterion Collection

Agreed HinkydinkyTruesmith, Producing their 1000th release is a milestone for them. Lord knows there won’t be a 2000.

Well, if it were going to be the final physical release then we all know what it really needs to be–––

––that April Fool's Day KINDERGARTEN COP they cruelly teased up with several years ago.

Better cover art and better special features than most releases get nowadays.

Purely speculative but perhaps Apocalypse Now, in tandem with it being their first UHD release?

spine 1000 Citizen Kane (LD 001) and spine 1001 KIng Kong (LD 002)
As I said that was speculative, but I would bet on this.

Seems like only yesterday people were pulling this bullshit over spine # 400. And 500, 700, and—yes—1000, too.

Indicator's spine #100 is William Castle's The Old Dark House for the record.

I don’t much care about spine numbers, but I share your dream. I’m still holding on to my vhs copies... I’ll take Cinema Europe too. I sold my DVD for big bucks back in the day...

Criterion's 1000th spine will almost certainly be a Greatest Hits release that is a compilation of 10-second clips of every film in the collection (with 10-seconds of black screen for every film that is OOP).

Extras Include:

-A photo gallery of cover art.

-The Mulvaney Show, a 24-hour documentary of one day in Jon Mulvaney's life

-A clip gallery of every celebrity visitor to the closet (no video)

1000=Citizen Kane in a 3-4 disc set featuring all previous Ultimate Collector's Edition supplements + The Eyes of Orson Welles & New Interviews with Criterion regulars/favorites.

1001=The Other Side of the Wind featuring A Final Cut for Orson & They'll Love Me When I'm Dead + Extended Interviews from those featuring (at least) Danny Huston and Peter Bogdanovich. Maybe even a commentary by Bogdanovich, as well.
Other side of the wind is an interesting idea.

But you should take a look at some like it hot, princess bride and the Philadelphia story, criterion doesn’t just Hoover up extras like you propose, they curate pretty selectively and judiciously when they license previous edition supplements from other companies that had dvd or blu editions of the films. And they generally commission several new analysis interview/featurettes and cull heavily from 1970s era British and American TV interviews but can be hit or miss (the Katherine Hepburn dick cavett show episodes are unbelievably spectacular)

They do tend to try to carry over their LD commentaries however.

I’d expect Kane would involve more extras than Ambersons, which had about 5.5 hours of extras and three hours of commentaries. So it would definitely be a two disc set, but it being a three disc set or more would be dependent on if they include any bonus films like the HBO 1990s movie dramatization, me and orson Welles or many of the other such like ;)

An Orson Welles set ala the Bergman Set would make more sense for the 1000th spine. Would make Citizen Kane more justified and gives them the chance to do Other Side of the Wind and other rumored films as well.

One reason why I think Kane is plausible is that despite a lot of people saying it's already packed - the Warner Blu-ray really "only" has the two commentaries, a few short interviews, storyboards, and the trailer. I don't know if the Battle doc was exclusive to the set that also included RKO 281 on DVD. All of Criterion's other Welles films have way more substantial extras. You could fill up a whole second disc with a new Simon Callow interview, pieces on the Mercury Theatre actors, Toland/the cinematography, Herrmann's score, the editing, the evolution of the script, another Cavett or Snyder episode, Too Much Johnson (and The Hearts of Age), remaster the trailer, etc. I'd even do one on the legacy of the film going into the physical history, even on the restoration and various video editions over the years since it was their first laserdisc.

You're right. I don't know the actual details in something like this, but my thinking was that Warner would require them to take much of what was included in their previous UCE as part of the deal. (Though typing it all out, I probably have that backwards.) I threw Eyes in there as well thinking that Criterion would feel like they had to add something substantial to even bother. I'd personally be fine if it was all new material, as I already own the Warner UCE.

Thinking even more about all of this Citizen Kane talk, though, part of me now wants them to feed into all the speculation only to then have Spine 1000 go to a surprise release of How Green Was My Valley.

I think spine #1001 should be 9 (Shane Acker, 2009)

Maybe it'll be like #1 and they'll hold off on a release until a later date.

If indeed they plan to make a big deal out of the spine # (and, honestly, why wouldn't they?), then this seems to me to be the most likely scenario.

There was never a question about what #1 was, though. Grand Illusion was "announced" with the earlier titles (with cover art similar to the laserdisc's) but was delayed well over a year when better elements were found.

And why would holding off on a release for a later date be “the most likely scenario”?

I think we’re all overestimating how much Criterion cares. They probably don’t give a shit.

I think the most realistic bets are either Grand Budapest Hotel (the most likely) or a Godzilla or Won Kar Wai Set
