I'm really not sure anything is too far fetched from the company that gave us an ill sore possum.

Re: Criterion New Year's Doodle 2019
Not until we get something for one of the obvious clues that is as next level nonsensical (but seriously intended) as a tri-lingual pun combined with the obscurity of a doodle (which a director occasionally did along with his signature) and combines with said director having said something similar one time in some interview.
(Or it could be Ingrid Bergman on an eclipsed moon)
Until we reach the point of a sincere and insane dame-moon guess, I don’t think we’ve reached locking point yet.

Could it be as simple/wonky as a board game for Assayas’s Boarding Gate? (It’d be a weird choice from his back catalogue.)

Regarding the clock, could the 9 be referring to the 9 films Astaire and Rogers made together (minus the later Barkleys of Broadway) and the 2 because there's two of them?

If the left man w/ baby is Cary Grant in Bringing Up Baby, perhaps the right man w/ baby is Eddie Bracken in The Miracle of Morgan's Creek. Too far fetched? The drawing has more of a Danny Kaye look, honestly, but I can't think of a significant Kaye film where he deals with a baby.

Yeah it's more like 9:07, but I would think it unlikely that it'll be After Hours also since that film really takes place during the late night hours, and the poster for the movie has the time reading almost 2:03.

Let's get real with some of these suggestions. The Jesus figure is a dead ringer for Emmanuel Mouret and the 'V' for Une autre VIE. It's staring you in the face guys.
The angel is definitely Cate Blanchett and that's no halo it's a RING. Giant box set of Lord of the Rings and Hobbits in time for Xmas 2019. Roll over Bergman.

Perhaps another reason to suspect that the stars in the sky refer to Konrad Wolf's STARS (1959)NABOB OF NOWHERE wrote: ↑Thu Jan 03, 2019 7:04 amI'd bet the farm one it being the Agnieszka Holland oneRupert Pupkin wrote: ↑Thu Jan 03, 2019 6:58 amexistential question of a cloudy rainy grey morning : Europa Europa : is it the Lars Von Trier movie (thus a Blu-Ray upgrade) or another movie (IMHO an excellent movie) the one with Julie Delpy in Ms. perfect fraülein with blonde Bunches or pig tail...

Re: Criterion New Year's Doodle 2019
The clock is swinging from a tree, its clearly a double clue for Hou Hsiao-hsien's T(h)ree Times.
And the angry worm (clearly not an inchworm) is a double clue for Dan Gilroy's Nightcrawler.
Also if you squint hard enough, the angel looks kinda like Dolly Parton, and she has a halo. Clearly meant to indicate Hello Dolly. Clearly.
But now for a serious suggestion. The stars could be refering to Vincent van Gogh's Starry Night paintings, so it could be a reference to Vincent van Gogh, and Julian Schnabel's latest film, At Eternity's Gate?

Re: Criterion New Year's Doodle 2019
I doubt Criterion can do At Eternity's Gate since CBS Films has a distribution deal with Lionsgate. (Inside Llweyn Davis wasn't affected as the deal only applies to post-2014 titles.)

Re: Criterion New Year's Doodle 2019
Board game -> Snakes and Ladders
Balloon "S" -> flying "S"
Snakes on a Plane confirmed?!
In all seriousness, I don't think the board game is meant to be analyzed too closely. The fact that it's there in the first place likely points to Funny Games (although it does resemble Candyland).
And if we're counting stars, shouldn't we include the symbols on the board game as well? There'd be a total of 24 then.

If we haven't got any solid guesses for the tree yet, how about Pintilie's The Oak? It looks as much like an oak as it does like any particular tree.

Maybe the tree is this forum's Trees, so Hou Hsiao-hsien's The Assassin. (For newer members this is a circa 2015 joke).
