I just Wiki’d Gast. It has to be The Greatful Dead movie.
CC usually has at least one music based release each year. We are due.

Can anyone find a single image of Gast wearing a coat like that?

I can't even find him one of him wearing a hat like that.
Truman Capote however...

Pretty sure the guy on the left is Wim Wenders, which would make sense of [Wen] We Were Kings.

But Wenders has hair.

No, but that's why I suggested it might be a leather jacket, and that we're getting a boxset of his films.

Except that his name is pronounced Vim Venders.

None of these answers are very satisfying (‘When we “were” wearing the same outfits’ is a terrible idea for representing past tense, so I don’t think so). Been a long time since we’ve been unable to just lock this thread after the pic goes up

My first thought for the guy on the left was Norman Lear, but I got nothing as far as titles go ... unless it's some version of "King Lear," but the man on the right does look like Coppola, so I don't see how that fits. Plus, I've never seen Norman Lear where a jacket like that.

Kagemusha + Ran? Coppola is credited as executive producer of Kagemusha and, obviously, Ran is an adaptation of King Lear.
This feels like a reach though.

Let’s be more constructive here:
+ We gave two men who are too specific-looking to be randomly chosen
+ There is some kind of word play about dreaming, thinking of, or fantasizing about being king (or kings). Royalty, ruler, and other words of this ilk may be involved
+ No indication of anything but present state for king-dom, so When We WERE Kings makes no sense
+ The clue needs to pass the smell test. Every last one of these are easily understood once it’s solved. If it just kinda maybe fits, it’s likely not it

WB titles that are close fits to “dreaming King” but still unlikely due to the rest of the clue of the specific men on the bench: A Dream of Kings (would be other way around if so), If I Were King (good fit for title, but the two men don’t represent the actors or Sturges), Kings Row, the Man Who Would Be King...

Are they Allen Ginsberg and William S. Burroughs?
If so is it “beat” related?

- the hat of the man on the left is significant to identifying him, I would think.
- the man on the left has his facial expression change from frowning (below) to a bit of a smirk (above)
- A clue for "When we Were Kings" would probably be drawn to reference Foreman and Ali.
- the crown on the left has an eight pointed starburst asterisk, the crown on the right has a typical five point star.

Another title fit that doesn't match the specific men: Mon roi, ie "My king" may be represented literally by the men thinking of "their" king. IFC, woman director, good fit for Criterion and a good title fit, but the two men make no sense, so prob not

"Dream king" sounds like "drinking" when said out loud, any titles with that in them a good fit?

This might be overthinking it, but I don’t think any king’s Crown has a bigass star on it. Maybe the key word here is “crowns” not “kings”.
I can’t think of any way to make Three Crowns of a Sailor work, but something else?

Something else that crossed my mind is that they are thinking of Kings. We know Lobster prepared a new restoration of the DeMille film and I presume Criterion will release it eventually (unless the rights go elsewhere), but once again, the men in the drawing make no sense for this title.
I can't help but think that the bench must play a role in the clue as well, perhaps a visualization of a scene in the hinted film? Is it meant to be a park bench?

Joe Eszterhas and his agent have twin visions in which a crowned king comes again after another...
Joe Eszterhas comes again...

This is a really good guess, but yeah, the specific men being there just wreck it yet again

My initial thought was the guy on the left was Billy Wilder. Wilder & Coppola were the first 2 persons to win 3 oscars for a single film. However, Wilder did it for The Apartment and Coppola for The Godfather Part II and neither of those seem like likely releases due to Arrow's release of The Apartment and The Godfather being an evergreen title for Paramount. I can find photos of Wilder wearing a similar hat, but not a similar coat. So I'm not sure.

Someone remind me (it's been a while since I've seen it): does Ali in Fear Eats the Soul ever wear glasses? Because that could be an explanation for the character on the right, and it would fit the subject of When We Were Kings being Muhammad Ali.

What if the men are Stephen KING in his bearded state and Norman LEAR in his current state? But then, ironically, unlike the other guesses, this requires disregarding the dream part!
