Films released by Criterion available on Blu-ray elsewhere

#1 Post by eerik » Sat Jun 18, 2011 2:04 pm

I am currently working on a list of Criterion Collection films that have been released on Blu-ray by other distributors but not yet by Criterion. The aim of this list is to help and inform but also to predict and speculate about possible future upgrades.

As the list is currently a work in progress it only includes list of countries where the film has been released. I will constantly update it and later I'll include links to reviews, etc. and a short comment if the Blu-ray is region free, includes English subtitles, is recommended or not. Feel free to correct and update me when needed.

They are, although they don't look very good.

Both The Only Son and There Was A Father are presented in 1080p on the BFI dual-format release (as supports to Late Spring and Equinox Flower, respectively).

In fact, for convenience's sake, these are the BFI Ozus that are in 1080p:

An Autumn Afternoon
Early Summer
Equinox Flower
Good Morning
Late Autumn
Late Spring
The Only Son
There Was a Father
Tokyo Story

...and these are the ones that aren't:

Brothers and Sisters of the Toda Family
A Hen in the Wind
I Was Born, But...
A Mother Should Be Loved
What Did the Lady Forget?

Although The Only Son doesn't look great (although the compression is of course better), I'd argue There Was a Father is a good improvement picture-wise in HD (the sound is poor but that's unavoidable with the source). So I definitely would recommend picking this one up if you've got a big screen and would notice these things (Plus it comes paired with Equinox Flower which looks stunning in HD!)

Worth noting that Andrei Rublev is a different cut.

I'd be curious to know why CC opted to release all those Ozus on the Eclipse line, since a lot of them are relatively high profile films within his oeuvre. They're not 'rare films' or anything (i.e. Late Autumn, The End of Summer)

Because they ran out of extras to put on Ozu discs and thought it might be nice to let people buy them for about $14 apiece.
