Has it been confirmed that there are more than one Mann titles coming to the collection? I only ever heard Thief was coming.

Weekend's there of course. Also, Quadrophenia, Harold and Maude. Let the speculation begin!Criterion Facebook wrote:We think you're really going to like tomorrow's New Year's drawing:

Oh shit, time to sell my Harold and Maude DVD while it's still worth a small country's GNP

The first things that came into my mind were Little Fugitive, Harold and Maude and Nanook of the North. Pretty sure Kino still has the rights to the former though.

Re: Forthcoming Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vol.
The bike from Quadrophenia, Maude on her bike and the honking and beeping of Weekend are all clear enough. The Little Fugitive was my first Coney Island thought too, though it seems like the Engel estate already has their Kino deal. Suppose it could be expiring. I also thought of the possibility that they might have accessed Paramount's restored version of It, trumping the Kino and public domain versions with a loaded Blu-ray.

Any ideas what the Coney Island reference would be if not the Engel?

Re: Forthcoming Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vol.
Any thoughts on that prominent line in the sand?
The only other films I can think of that prominently feature Coney Island and seem like legitimate Criterion fodder are It and The Warriors. Aronofsky's first two films take place there, but they seem firmly with Lionsgate.onedimension wrote:Any ideas what the Coney Island reference would be if not the Engel?

The only other two I can think of are Walter Hill's The Warriors and Harold Lloyd's Speedy.onedimension wrote:Any ideas what the Coney Island reference would be if not the Engel?

I'm pretty sure all of James Gray's films at one point touch upon Coney Island, being set in Brighton Beach and all, most expliticly Little Odessa (and isn't it a Coney pier where Leonard tries to kill himself in the opening scene of Two Lovers?). The Yards would be a great release...

Any thoughts to the Nessie type head peaking out of the water? And could Coney Island be a Woody Allen clue?

Coney Island is definitely Lonesome. Banging head against wall for not thinking of it before, as we already knew it was coming. That sea monster just looks like a wave to me.

I was thinking perhaps Lonesome for the single set of footprints but I never knew it was set on Coney Island. Great job! Any ideas on why Inuit Maude is wearing some sort of medallion?

Re: Forthcoming Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vol.
It's too small to make out clearly, but there seems to be some kind of design on the necklace, which looks like a (five-point) star; admittedly, this is a stretch, but was there anything like that in Rosemary's Baby (also with Ruth Gordon)? IMDB turns up "necklace" and "pendant" as keywords for the film, but it's been too long since I've seen it to remember such a detail. Certainly not outside the realm of possibility, given Criterion's relationship with both Paramount and Polanski.Calvin wrote:Any ideas on why Inuit Maude is wearing some sort of medallion?

Boom! If that traffic jam is centered around a (Cronenberg's) Crash, Criterion just made my year with a clue-for-a-clue.

Re: Forthcoming Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vol.
In the film, Maude takes the priest's car with his St. Christopher medallion on the dash, but that seems like a stretch, so probably referring to something else. That meta-Ruth-Gordon Rosemary's Baby thing would be genius.Calvin wrote:Any ideas on why Inuit Maude is wearing some sort of medallion?
So, for our headstart for tomorrow, we know:
Coney Island: Lonesome
Multi-mirrored bike: Quadrophenia
Old dame in hood on bike: Harold and Maude
Honk, Beep, Car(?): Weekend
Line in Sand: ????? (just the track of Quadrophenia bike?)
Medallion on Maude: Rosemary's Baby!?! ???????
Considering the apparent theme of this year's drawing, I expect that tomorrow we'll see Igor on his motorbike from La Promesse, something from the Wenders road films, maybe Die Brüke, and if we're really lucky, Martin Sheen and Sissy Spacek behind the wheel of a stolen Cadillac.
Yes, I realize that randomly speculating about what a guy might draw for me to speculate about is a new low, even for me.
