Based on what they’ve been busting out, wouldn’t be surprised to see a Carrie Nations cover tonight

Could be signalling the long-rumoured Adventureland release

Ha - well Junebug would be great, but they just left Boston and had a day before playing in NY tonight so I wouldn't make anything out of it

If there is a YLT-related release coming it could also potentially be a Painleve upgrade, or a collection of Hubley short films (especially since the latter was already prepped, with extras, on the Channel).

While we're suggesting guesses for their visit I'll throw out a long shot, I'm Not There

Somebody let swo17* into the Criterion Closet

Dying to know what Bertrand Mandico took from the closet.

Criterion posted a pic of Tim Blake Nelson in the closet. I know these usually don't correspond to a release, but hopefully that isn't the case this time and he was there to shoot an interview for The Ballad of Buster Scruggs.

That would be great. But it could also be for a b&w cut of Del Toro's Nightmare Alley which has been rumored

Oh God please, anything but Nightmare Alley. Buster Scruggs would be a nice rescue from the Netflix vault and it's not had any physical disc release unlike the Del Toro.

Let the tastes diverge! I'd take either Heavyweights or Leaves of Grass over both of those getting announced, even if as an extra sixth title

del Toro already said Nightmare Alley is forthcoming, didn’t he? Could be that.

Tim Blake Nelson is barely in Nightmare Alley, right? He’s just credited as “carny boss.” Anyway, they let anybody in that closet now. It’s just a mutual promotion gimmick and probably should no longer be considered an indicator of anything.

A UHD of O Brother Where Are Thou would be quite welcome

O Brother had a fairly low-resolution digital intermediate, didn’t it? I doubt Criterion would want to upscale that. They get enough flack for the encoding of movies with true 4K masters.

I don't think they care, it'd sell so many copies to Coen and Criterion and general UHD format acolytes

Yeah, as I said, it almost never has anything to do with releases, except when it does. Which is almost never. I really miss when it was a hint at titles in the works, since we get no clues anymore, it would be cool if it went back to being that.

If Criterion gave us The Grey Zone they can release as many Nightmare Alleys as they want.
