The Bolshevik Box isn't listed on the Flicker Alley website. Unusual, in that their new releases are usually announced via e-mail with a discount code from Flicker Alley themselves.

I thought that was strange to. It's always possible Amazon jumped the gun with the listing. Wouldn't be the first time.

Maybe the email will follow shortly but is slightly late because of the holiday season.

Holy shit, Juleen Compton! The only reference in Luc Moullet’s Brigitte et Brigitte I had to look up because her films completely disappeared from circulation after the sixties, even on back channels

Its worth noting that Jaque Catelain is the star of several films by Marcel L'Herbier, including L'Inhumaine and Eldorado, in addition to directing two films.

The Signal Tower got really good reactions at last year’s Silent Film fest... Glad I’ll have the opportunity to catch it after a cold made me miss it then.

This is amazing. Juleen Compton's films and Signal Tower have been on my wishlist for so long. I'll certainly take Gallery of Monsters too. The people at Flicker Alley are something else.

The Beast Must Die sounds nice, Argentine film noir sure is rare. What I would also like to see on home video is The Black Vampire because it is inspired by Fritz Lang’s M.

Eddie Muller's Film Noir Foundation has done restorations of both The Black Vampire(El Vampiro Negro) and The Bitter Stems(Los Tallos Amargos), so it should only be a matter of time before somebody releases them on home video. Flicker Alley would be my bet of which studio is most likely to do so.

Been watching the Pudovkin set chronologically. I was hoping someone here had seen it and could give me some more information. CHESS FEVER is in very good shape but MOTHER is rough and looks like a 1970's restoration (?) Certain shots come from a print in slightly better quality than the South American sections of METROPOLIS.

I don't have access to the copy I pre-ordered yet (of course I get most of my packages sent to work, so I won't be getting my copy until after this quarantine ends), but it is my understanding that only Storm Over Asia has a new remaster. I assume in the case of Mother, either the restoration is simply too expensive or there are no longer elements available to do a newer restoration.

Watched THE END OF ST. PETERSBURG and STORM OVER ASIA. Both look restored. PETERSBURG has a little flickering in it but is very watchable and the best copy of it I've seen.

Kristin Thompson's thoughts on the set

http://www.davidbordwell.net/blog/2020/ ... ovkin-gap/

She basically states that better quality prints exist for Mother and The End of St. Petersburg is cropped, so the image is off-center. She reiterates that it's the best they've looked so far, but it is definitely a flawed set.

I've been enjoying the Bolshevik Trilogy release though I'm disappointed by how bad Mother still looks, as noted earlier in the thread. However I just want to mention that Chess Fever (still great, and I'm so glad it's on the set) includes surely one of the best title cards of all time, "Finally, someone else who hates chess!"

Sorry for two posts in a row, but Peter Bagrov's commentary on Storm Over Asia on that release is excellent. (So is the film, which I'd never seen.)
