Any chance of Alphaville having Germany Year 90 Nine Zero as an extra?

Thomas Crown Affair from Kino is a MAJOR upgrade. Kind of astonished how bad the MGM looks.

I’ll give a shout out to Mad Dog and Glory. The bonus commentary is a bit frustrating, as one finds out the test audience forced the filmmakers to deliver a less than stellar ending. Perhaps the script was doomed to fall into predictability anyway. Richard Price didn’t realize how interesting his script was till the movie loses steam in the last act.

DeNiro somehow shrinks, and plays milquetoast exceptionally well. David Caruso was born to play a cop, and has some great scenes, including everything with a really funny Mike Starr. Uma is gorgeous too, but perhaps less interesting when they made her likable. Bill Murray predates Tony Soprano by nearly 10 years, with his therapy asides and likability/moments of violence.

I haven’t seen this movie since it played in theaters, and Chicago looks wonderful in the early 90’ thanks Robby Mueller. The Louis Prima scene is a real highlight. And it also features a miracle of a love scene, awkward and tender.

If Criterion had been interested in Lost Highway, they'd have bought the sub-licence. Doesn't feel like any of their producers is a big enough fan of the film.

Seems like Criterion can be surprisingly selective when it comes to some pet directors.

I mean, do you guys also think Kino is putting out all the Melvilles this time because Criterion doesn't like him anymore?

Great news about you getting Thunderbolt & Lightfoot. I had the Twilight Time blu but sold it so this is a good opportunity to get it at a more agreeable price.

Coming July 2nd on DVD & BD!
2 Action Classics Starring Belmondo!

Le Professionnel (1981)
• Audio Commentary by Film Historians Howard S. Berger, Steve Mitchell and Nathaniel Thompson
• Theatrical Trailer

International superstar Jean-Paul Belmondo (Le Doulos, Le Marginal) brings his smoldering intensity to French super-spy Joss Beaumont, a top agent sent on a mission to assassinate a foreign dictator. But when the political winds change, and Beaumont is double-crossed by his own government, revenge becomes the name of the game. Prison can’t hold him and no one can stand in his way as Beaumont lays down the gauntlet—he will carry out his assignment and someone must die. Director Georges Lautner (Road to Salina) delivers a taut, thrilling espionage drama with a sensational score by legendary maestro Ennio Morricone (The Good, the Bad and the Ugly). Beautifully shot by Henri Decaë (Les Bonnes Femmes, Bob Le Flambeur) and co-starring Robert Hossein (Vice and Virtue) and Jean Desailly (The Soft Skin).

The Outsider (1983) Le Marginal
• Audio Commentary by Film Historian Samm Deighan
• Theatrical Trailer

From Jacques Deray, the legendary director of The Swimming Pool, Borsalino, The Outside Man and Flic Story. Screen legend Jean-Paul Belmondo (Les Professionnel, Le Doulos) stars as Commissaire Philippe Jordan, a rogue French detective in Marseille infiltrating a network of drug traffickers and their crime boss, Sauveur Meccacci (Henry Silva, Sharky’s Machine, Code of Silence). Two of the film’s best features are the terrific color photography by Xaver Schwarzenberger (Veronika Voss, Lili Marleen) and the musical score by composer extraordinaire Ennio Morricone (For a Few Dollars More, The Sicilian Clan). The stellar cast includes Tchéky Karyo (La Femme Nikita), Roger Dumas (That Man from Rio), Michel Robin (Amélie) and Jean-Claude Dreyfus (Delicatessen).

Excited to see how Kino’s restoration of Leon will compare to Criterion’s already stunning transfer. The other two will by far be the highlight of my year

Dead of Night (1945) with optional English subtitles
• A 4K Restoration
• Audio Commentary by Film Historian Tim Lucas
• Remembering "Dead of Night" - Documentary (75:35)

(1945) B&W 103 Minutes 1.37:1 Not Rated
A group of strangers is mysteriously gathered at a country estate where each reveals a chilling tale of the supernatural. First, a racer survives a brush with death only to receive terrifying premonitions from beyond the grave. Then a teen's innocent game of hide-and-seek leads to an encounter with the macabre. Next, a young couple purchases an antique mirror that unleashes a horrific power from its past. In a lighter vein, two competitive golfers play for stakes that may haunt the winner forever. Finally, a renowned ventriloquist descends into an abyss of madness and murder when his dummy develops a mind of its own. But even after these frightening tales are told, does one final nightmare await them all? Britain's venerable Ealing Studios brought together four brilliant directors, Charles Crichton (The Lavender Hill Mob), Basil Dearden (The Mind Benders), Alberto Cavalcanti (They Made Me a Fugitve) and Robert Hamer (It Always Rains on Sunday) to create this classic chiller that remains one of the most influential horror films ever made. This is the uncut and complete UK version of Dead of Night, now newly restored in 4K from original archival materials.

Screen legends Katharine Hepburn (The Lion in Winter) and Nick Nolte (Jefferson in Paris) are out to make a killing in this wildly outrageous comedy directed by Anthony Harvey (They Might Be Giants). Grace Quigley (Hepburn) has come to the end of her rope and wants out. When she meets a sweet, neurotic hitman, Seymour Flint (Nolte), she comes up with a brainstorm: The unlikely pair will provide a painless parting for seniors who have had enough of life’s slings and arrows. As business booms, Grace and Seymour develop a warm, mother-son relationship, until “mom” begins to have ideas that could put Seymour in the clink for good. The superb supporting cast includes Elizabeth Wilson (9 to 5), Walter Abel (13 Rue Madeleine) and Chip Zien (Howard the Duck).

Merchant-Ivory's Jefferson in Paris (1995) with optional English subtitles

Color 139 Minutes 1.85:1 Rated PG-13
Another acclaimed triumph from producer Ismail Merchant, writer Ruth Prawer Jhabvala and director James Ivory, the award-winning creators of A Room with a View, Howards End and The Remains of the Day—Jefferson in Paris delivers stylish and highly provocative big-screen entertainment. Hollywood great Nick Nolte (Mulholland Falls) stars with the sexy Greta Scacchi (Shattered) in this impassioned story of forbidden love. During one man’s unforgettable visit to liberal and socially permissive France, he meets and falls in love with a worldly and mysterious woman. Mumford (1999) with optional English subtitles
• NEW Interview with Director Lawrence Kasdan
• Making-of Featurette
• 5.1 and 2.0 Audio Options
• Theatrical Trailer

Color 111 Minutes 2.35:1 Rated R
From writer/director Lawrence Kasdan, the creator Body Heat, The Big Chill, Silverado, The Accidental Tourist and Grand Canyon. When a wanna-be psychologist, curiously named Mumford (Loren Dean, Space Cowboys) comes to the idyllic town of the same name, he offers his talent for listening and a disarming frankness as the town’s quirkiest citizens scramble for a seat on his couch. As he lightens hearts darkened by old secrets—including those of the beautiful and troubled Sofie Crisp (Hope Davis, About Schmidt)—no one realizes he’s hiding a whopper of his own, or that he’s fallen head over heels for one of his patients. Filled with personality disorders, surprises, offbeat alliances and some hilarious fantasies, Mumford is just what the laugh doctor ordered. The wonderful cast includes Jason Lee (Chasing Amy), Mary McDonnell (Dances with Wolves), David Paymer (Get Shorty), Martin Short (¡Three Amigos!), Pruitt Taylor Vince (Wild at Heart), Alfre Woodard (Cross Creek), Jane Adams (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind), Priscilla Barnes (TV’s Three’s Company), Ted Danson (TV’s Cheers), Zooey Deschanel (500 Days of Summer), Elisabeth Moss (TV’s The Handmaid’s Tale), Robert Stack (Airplane!) and Kevin Tighe (Road House).

The Champagne Murders (1967) with optional English subtitles
• Audio Commentary by Film Historians Howard S. Berger and Nathaniel Thompson
• Trailers From Hell with Tim Hunter
• Theatrical Trailer

Color 98 Minutes 2.35:1 Not Rated
From Claude Chabrol, the legendary director of Les Bonnes Femmes, Les Biches, Betty and L’Enfer. This stylish psychological thriller has such labyrinthine plotting that many critics, upon the film’s original release, found it too confusing. Christine Belling (Yvonne Furneaux, La Dolce Vita) tries to convince her husband’s friend Paul Wagner (Maurice Ronet, The Unfaithful Wife) to sell his venerable champagne business to an American company and asks her husband Chris (Anthony Perkins, Psycho) to persuade the stubborn Paul. While on a trip to Hamburg, Paul picks up a girl in a restaurant—the next morning, the girl turns up dead, and Paul can’t remember what happened. Chris, who becomes aware of the incident, promptly tells his wife, and she tries to blackmail Paul into signing a deal with the Americans. But when another woman turns up dead, and again Paul is the last person to see her alive, Paul begins questioning his own sanity. Legendary actress Stéphane Audran (Babette’s Feast) and great character actor Henry Jones (Support Your Local Sheriff!) co-star in this Hitchcockian thriller beautifully shot in Scope by Jean Rabier (Cold Sweat, Madame Bovary).
