Re: Twilight Time / Redwind
I absolutely adore Melvin and Howard -- my copy is the bargain-bin DVD, which doesn't even have the commentary -- so it's going to prompt my first TT purchase ever once it's up for preorder, and I'd like to order at least one more disc from them. There aren't that many things in their current catalog I'm interested in but given the grievances raised on this thread, is there anything that should deter me from picking up their editions of either Husbands and Wives, The World of Henry Orient or I Want to Live! (meaning problems with the discs or better editions elsewhere)? Doing a quick search, I saw some concern about the transfer of Husbands and Wives but it's one of the best Allen films and I have trouble imagining another Blu version is forthcoming...

Re: Twilight Time / Redwind
Even if another Blu would be released, considering the history of WA's movie restorations (ie pretty much none) and their historical lack of extras, it'd be very unlikely to be significantly different from the TT release, both technically and editorially.dustybooks wrote: ↑Mon Apr 01, 2019 11:02 amDoing a quick search, I saw some concern about the transfer of Husbands and Wives but it's one of the best Allen films and I have trouble imagining another Blu version is forthcoming...

World of Henry Orient looks A-OK. Haven’t watched my copy of I Want to Live! but so long as you’re okay with them cropping the 1.66 to 1.85 (which even Criterion would have done these days), it should be fine from what I’ve seen/read

Thank you both!
Ah I see. Well I guess that's a decent reason to keep the old DVD stowed away someplace.domino harvey wrote: ↑Mon Apr 01, 2019 12:15 pmWorld of Henry Orient looks A-OK. I would have hoped Melvin and Howard ended up w/ Criterion. The screenwriter, cinematographer, and two of the lead actors are still around, and Paul Le Mat in particular has had some interesting things to say about the film over the years. But any opportunity to see this in an excellent version is welcome. I don't know whether Melvin or Something Wild are my favorite Demme films, but they are certainly the best proof of his very special talents.

Damn, thought Criterion would grab Melvin and Howard. Definitely picking that up.

Jesus Christ, with shipping and rate of exchange, I just paid $60 Canadian for Melvin & Howard. I don't know who I hate more - TT or myself.

I feel your pain. I’m really trying to wait now with TT announcements and see if a UK release is forthcoming.jazzo wrote:Jesus Christ, with shipping and rate of exchange, I just paid $60 Canadian for Melvin & Howard. I don't know who I hate more - TT or myself.

I can mostly convince myself to wait for sales or to see if Indicator will do a version, but this is a beloved movie by a beloved filmmaker, pun intended.

Indicator would be a good fit for Melvin & Howard in the UK. Otherwise, wait for a year or two and this TT edition should come down in price for some seasonal sales.

Anyone here seen the musicals? From a cursory glance they don't seem like standouts.

Re: Twilight Time / Redwind
Melvin and Howard looks lovely; I actually never before noticed how aesthetically beautiful a film it is. I'd never heard the commentary, ported from a late '90s DVD, and despite some complaints online about a lot of dead spots, I really enjoyed it. I always find Demme so infectiously enthusiastic, and Toby Rafelson offered a lot of insight as well; the movies she worked on in this era certainly have a distinctive sense of lived-in detail about them, and I found it valuable to hear her speak about the amount of work involved. And I was really blown away to discover that the whole of the game show sequence was improvised, pretty much on the fly.
One hilarious moment comes when Demme, trying to remember the key figures of the Dogme 95 movement, earnestly refers to "Lars von Truer" (and credits him with The Celebration!). At any rate, he's so much fun to listen to even when he's just sitting and laughing at the film, and it brought home how much I'm going to miss his being a continued active voice in the movies.

That front cover perfectly evokes that amazing scene where Jimmy Stewart and Dean Martin have their hats and their bodies gradually eaten away by a supernatural brown fog as they fire their guns uselessly into it.

How is Warlock? I’ve heard lots of good things about the book but I don’t think I’ve ever heard anyone even mention the film.
